Seminary of the Southwest welcomed Heidi J. Kim , missioner for racial reconciliation, The Episcopal Church, for the opening keynote and discussion for Black History month on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. Ms. Kim addressed the community and guests from local parishes in her presentation titled  Racial Reconciliation: A Pilgrimage for the Faithful.

Guests for the evening included members of the Joint Standing Committee on Planning and Arrangements, including Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, who were meeting in Austin in advance of General Convention 2018.

Dr. Brené Brown delivers Payne Lecture

Seminary of the Southwest welcomed Dr. Brené Brown to the campus for the annual Payne Lecture on February 11, 2016. Researcher, story teller, and New York Times best selling author of The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly and recently published Rising Strong, Dr. Brown spoke to a packed house for the invitation only event which honors Claude Payne, retired diocesan bishop of Texas and former chair of the seminary's board of trustees.

Dean and President Cynthia Briggs Kittredge greeted Dr. Brown at the reception hosted by the seminary's board of trustees before the lecture.

Brené Brown had the full attention of her audience at the seminary as she shared her research and stories of vulnerability, courage and authenticity.

In Rome

Dr. Dan Joslyn-Siemiatkoski, associate professor of church history at Southwest, led a study trip to Rome with a group of students in January. The trip was generously funded by contributions from friends of the seminary making it possible for students to participate.


During the last week of January, I took nine students from Seminary of the Southwest for a study trip to Rome. Our trip came on the heels of the recent Anglican Primates' Meeting in which the Episcopal Church was reprimanded for its actions and teachings
regarding human sexuality. For the previous weeks I had been puzzling over how reconciliation was possible within the Anglican Communion. In Rome, I glimpsed glimmers of such a future...
