Outdoor Fabrics
This time of year we spend much more time enjoying our outdoor living areas. This expanded living space incorporates furniture, rugs and other soft goods that have to withstand the elements of nature. Materials for chair cushions, shades, awnings and panels now offer increased sustainability, use of "green" materials, and a huge variety of styles and colors. When choosing a fabric for outdoor use you should consider several things: its UV-Ray "sun" resistance, color retention, water-repellency, and stain resistance. Many companies even offer warranties on their fabrics. Quality outdoor fabrics are not just coated with a protective coating, it is woven into every fiber. Specialized UV threads should be used in the construction of all products. For these reasons it important to choose a quality fabric and know the fabrication techniques the company uses. The most recognizable name is Sunbrella but other fabric companies also offer outdoor lines. Reputable fabric stores will be happy to tell you who the manufacturer is if you ask. Knowing what company you are buying from and that their product offers and warranties the considerations mentioned above protects your investment in a good quality fabric that will last many years.
Outdoor fabric is meant to be left outside, but it isn't maintenance-free. Try to keep cushions, umbrellas, and pillows out of direct downpours, and they'll have a longer life span. If items get soaked, lean them upright against a wall, and allow all the moisture to drain out. To spot clean, dip a rag in a solution of two parts bleach and one part water, and then wipe items clean. Mold and mildew stick to dirt, so shake out cushions often to get rid of dust, pollen, and dirt. If absolutely necessary, machine-wash cushion and pillow covers in cold water, and line dry. Never put acrylic fabric in a dryer; it will melt.
Outdoor fabrics today are not like the stiff, one colored choices of the past. With all the choices available you will be able to chose colors and patterns that compliment your yard and home. |
Outdoor Hardware
If you are using outdoor fabrics you will also need to consider outdoor hardware. Until a few years ago it was difficult to find decorative rods that were suited to use on porches and patios. Hardware companies have responded to the demand and are now offering all types of options. One of my favorites is The Final Company, as seen at the right. They have classic, beautiful designs in iron rods with a special protective coating and a 5 year warranty.
When choosing an outdoor rod it should be sturdy, especially if your curtains are heavy-weight and should be made from moisture resistant material like metal.

As you know we have been providing decorative hardware to our clients for the past several years. This year we are adding fabrics to our list of services. We are now carrying several lines of fabrics: Kasmir, Trend, Fabricut, Carole Fabrics, Michael's, Kast and Greenhouse just to name a few. Sample books are available for your to check out and take home to look through at your convenience. Almost all of these lines offer an online catalog and will send free memo samples it we don't have their sample book. |
