Let's take a moment to focus on "Leadership" as we bring in the new year--2014!  Each one of us can think about ways that we can lead by example. How do you provide leadership in your community? What do you think makes a Great Leader?

We want to reflect on the examples of both Civil Rights Leaders: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and Nelson Mandela whose worldwide tribute exposed a "Fake Interpreter" on the stage with President Obama and other world leaders.

My response to the "Fake Interpreter" was that yes we need REAL INTERPRETERS but for what reason? I hope that real interpreters can build a strong bridge between our Hearing World Leaders AND our Deaf World Leaders!

This brings me to the theme of LEADERSHIP! What makes a healthy Leader? Also since I am a Family Systems specialist, I have been thinking a lot about Families of Leaders!  My

own father was a well known deaf leader, Leo M. Jacobs, author of "A Deaf Adult Speaks Out". He said that he put a pencil on the front of his book (first edition) to represent his "sword" in his efforts to build stronger bridges between our Deaf AND Hearing Worlds.

On January 4, 2014, I helped celebrate the 80th birthdays of both Buddy and Bernice Singleton who are very well known Deaf Leaders in Surprise, Arizona. Thank you to our dear Singletons.  We are inspired by their many years of LEADERSHIP in the Deaf Community!

 Happy New Year!

Sheila Jacobs,

"A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at the end he and the other side must be closer, and thus emerge stronger."  --Nelson Mandela
