Double Pride looks forward to bringing more Deaf community and Coda stories to television and other screens.  We hired a television consultant 2 years ago to read the 1,000 pages I had written over 10 years, stories about life growing up in a Deaf family with Deaf relatives on both sides of the family tree going back to the 1800s. This includes chronicling the International CODA movement that led to the KODA Movement worldwide. Changing the way our next generation has "Double Pride".  We are now working closely with the television consultant to develop ways to bring our body of work to television and other screens.

We've also been gathering experience in the field of television:
  1. Spring 2013: Visited the set of "Switched at Birth" several times to understand more about a successful TV series. Very honored to be invited by Jack Jason to watch the filming of their Peabody award winning "silent episode".
  2. November 2013: Deaf episode of "Wives with Knives" aired on the  National Geographic Inside Crime Investigation Channel.  I consulted with the Post Production team to make sure the captions, the voice over, and the sign language dialogue matched up. The Story Editor commented to me: "This Deaf episode was the most emotional episode of all the ones we have filmed in the last 2 seasons"!
  3. August 2014: The "Murder at Gallaudet" episode of the TV series Campus Nightmares aired on the Lifetime Channel. I was interviewed as a Mental Health expert and am on screen twice - half way through the episode and at the end with the punch line about the impact of interpreting errors during the police interrogation and investigation.

This is an exciting time for Double Pride.    Stay tuned!

Warm Regards,

Sheila Jacobs

Double Pride Expands its Reach:
Department of State Visitors from
Venezuela

The State
Department's
International Visitor Leadership Program hosted a group of visitors from Venezuela for a special project Deaf Education: A Pedagogical and Cultural Approach.

Sheila had the opportunity to meet with the group and share ideas, information, and the Double Pride approach.  Deaf leaders from Venezuela expressed interest in further consultation and possibly bringing Double Pride to Venezuela.

"We are so appreciative of the hospitality you showed to the visitors.  I understand that the participants were particularly impressed with your leadership and dedication to the Deaf community. This is the type of interaction that the participants will remember for years to come and is the heart and soul of the State Department's mission to create mutual understanding through people-to-people exchanges. Thank you for welcoming citizens from around the world to your community and for giving of your time and talents to the International Visitor Leadership Program.

Double Pride in Oakland
In June 2014, Sheila Jacobs was invited to be on a Kaiser Patients Panel at Oakland Kaiser with 100 Kaiser Managers
serving 300,000 Kaiser patients from Alameda to Pinole.

She was also able to include her professional experiences as an "Outside Counselor" for Deaf Kaiser patients. Some Kaiser Deaf patients are able to get a special authorization through their Psychiatry Department to see a fluent ASL Counselor in their outside private practice.

Most Kaiser counselors  use Sign Language interpreters to work with their Deaf patients whereas many deaf patients prefer to communicate directly with a Signing Counselor who understands the Deaf Community. Kaiser Deaf patients are encouraged to check with their PCP to find out the latest procedure to request an outside referral to see Signing Counselors.

Sheila met the Kaiser Interpreter Coordinator and asked her how many languages do you work with at Kaiser?
Answer: 60 languages.   WOW!
