February 2012

Dear Friends,

My intention with the release of Only I Can Define Me was to bring awareness and advocacy surrounding mental health, education and women's issues.  I am pleased that these goals are being realized in a big way.  Together ,with other agencies and inviduals, we are making an impact in our community.

Thanks to the dedication of the members of the Action Alliance for Mental Health: Breaking the Silence in Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County Commission has declared 2012 the "Breaking the Silence" year!  Rita Thrasher of Boca Raton's Promise is responsible for bringing so many people together to bring awareness to mental health.

Thanks to everyone that attended the event at Columbia Hospital this week where Dr. Christopher Kye, MD discussed the medical analysis of adolescent bipolar disorder and I presented the "mother's perspective".  This event held 100 participants and had a waiting list of over 70!  While we were thrilled that the event filled to capacity, it puts an  exclamation point on the need in our communities surrounding mental health issues. Due to the overwhelming interest in this subject, we will be planning further events in conjunction with Columbia Hospital or affiliated hospitals.

Another issue near and dear to my heart is literacy and this month the voting began for Read Across Palm Beach County.  I am serving as a literacy amabassador this year and enourage everyone in Palm Beach County to vote for one of the five books selected at your local Starbucks or PA BBQ.  On March 12, 2012, the book that was selected will be announced in a press conference in West Palm Beach.  The fivebooks this year are Crooked Letter Crooked Letter, Digging to America, Last Train to Paradise, Picking Cotton and Zeitoun.

As most of you know, since my last newsletter, I have joined the New York firm, McLauglin & Stern, LLP as a partner in their West Palm Beach, FL office.  I am the first and only female partner in this office and very excited about the possibilities this new position brings.
The Let's Talk Initiative, Inc.

The Let's Talk Initiative had its first fundraisder on January 25, 2012 at Out of the Blue Restaurant at Jonathan's Landing.  The event was well attended and the local news did a story that will be featured on Channel 25 news in West Palm Beach sometime in February.  The board is planning several other fundraisers and as soon as the 501 3 c is granted, LTI will seek funding to provide resources to elementary-aged children suffering with mental or behavioral health concerns.  As well, the non-profit will focus on awareness and education for families of children suffering with mental health concerns.

Coming Up
My next book will be a realistic fiction work that will address the dilemma that female litigators have when striking the balance between being a woman, mother and caretaker and an agressive litigator. The book will take on the unsaid bias that exists in many of the male-dominated professions and the issues that women in business face.  It has been fun to write and has generated great interest
