National Service Day of Action: Dig
In!
Volunteers needed
to join the movement of those that will think globally and dig
locally!
Saturday, Sept. 25th,
9:30am-1pm
Jerome CommUnity Garden, 2115 W McFadden Ave, Santa Ana, CA
92704
What's Dig In?
Dig In events celebrate everyday people who are creating a
world where everyone can eat food that is good for them, good for
the people who grew it, and good for the planet. Slow Food USA
seeks to have 10,000+ people join this day of action, so let's join
in!
What's Slow Food OC's
Project?
Building a raised and terraced bed at the "eden-like" Jerome
CommUnity Garden in Santa Ana, followed by preparing, serving and
sharing lunch with the group after project completion.
How will our project help the
Jerome CommUnity Garden?
Not only will we help the Grain Project to feed more people in
need
with an expanded garden, we also plan to donate funds from Slow
Food
OC to help with the following:
- Raise capital to continue their funding that ends this month,
and
- Raise the money they need to re-open the Farmer's Market in
Santa Ana
We really, truly can
help!
Outreach Committee Chair Claudia Chapel will lead us
as we help them build the terraced bed. Also, Claudia suggests we
bring our recipes on how to prepare some of the food they are
growing.
For questions and to RSVP, please e-mail Claudia
Chapel. 15 total volunteers are needed to build garden bed and
prepare the meal (and to help distribute food).

Caring for City Chickens
Potluck Recap: Coops are In!
About
50 chicken enthusiasts gathered at the home of Slow Food OC Chair
Heather Westenhofer
on
Sunday, September 12 to learn about how to welcome poultry into
their own backyards. After
meeting the chickens, seeing their eggs, and learning about coop
selection, resources, and
chicken needs and behavior, the group
enjoyed a bountiful potluck together (which did not feature
one chicken dish but included homemade wine and beautiful handmade
breads!) until long after the
sun went down. Join us for our next potluck - see the October
newsletter for details!
