           I believe we all go through times when we question, maybe desperately, whether God is with us. Maybe in those times and possibly all times I advocate rephrasing the question. The question is not whether God is with us, but how is God with us?

            When I think about how God is present in my life especially through this faith community we call St. Mark's I become overwhelmed with a deep sense of gratitude. I find profound appreciation in the relationships I have. I find meaning in the commitments I make. I find value in the day and relevancy for my life. I am humbled to be a part of such a vibrant Body of Christ.

            St. Mark's is what it is because of the commitment we make to the good news of God in Christ. And because of this St. Mark's is not the church about someone else. It is the church about you. Your expressions of faith, your joy and wonder, your sorrows and loss, your radical hospitality, your love and devotion is this church.

            I ask you to prayerfully make a commitment to God by making a pledge to St. Mark's. If you already make a pledge I ask you to consider making a proportional increase. I ask you to allow your heart to manifest your treasures.  Please brig your 2015 Pledge Card to the Worship Service you attend this Sunday.  You will put it in the container on your way to communion as we celebrate together.

Let our commitments and devotion reveal how God is so very present with and through us.

                I love you, see you this Celebration Sunday,

                           Kyle

Fr. John's Branch - Stewardship: some thoughts

          In church circles, the word "stewardship" usually refers to the wise use of time, talent and treasure. Some pledge cards even include space to pledge time and talent. Still, when you mention stewardship most folks interpret it as meaning pledging to financially support a parish's mission and ministry. The word "stewardship" has humble roots, originally referring to the sty ward - the keeper of the pigs. But to tie the subject to one Sunday in the year or to only one of the many aspects of our lives is, truly, demeaning. We are really called to be awake and aware, conscious stewards of every moment.

            There are parishes whose stewardship programs would gladden the heart of the development officer of a large non-profit - monthly mailings, e-letters, special presentations by experts, a door to door Every Member Canvass. On the other hand, I had a Senior Warden who thought that we should simply announce when pledge cards were ready to be picked up at the parish office and that parishioners should stop by and fill one out. That's about as heartfelt and low-key as it can get!

          I remember the family discussion of my father's pledge of $11.00 a week to our little mission in New Hampshire, around 1955. For someone who earned his money in a skilled trade, and a seasonal one at that, it was a sizeable sum. He did it because the church meant so much to our family. His commitment was from the heart.

            I do know that every heart may not be totally won and that some intellectual guidance can be compelling. To sit down and divide our pledge by our gross income can be interesting. To get the percentage of income pledged just move the decimal point two digits to the right. Now you have a measure against the traditional percentage of the tithe. If our percentage is 10% some would consider our commitment enlightened and up to speed. However, the slow, dark side is the danger of having to wrestle with the demon of self righteousness.

            Truly, what is pledged is between us and God. Our motivation may be deep gratitude, value received, insurance against future needs for ministry, the practical reality of the cost of running a meaningful institution, the assurance of a tithe, or a multitude of other reasons. Ultimately, there may well come a moment: a sermon just for you, a hymn when your heartstrings make music, a Tuesday afternoon in the ICU, a moment of mourning in the presence of a Priest, a peace that passes understanding that will, by any estimation, be priceless.

Rev. Sue's Tendril: "Re-Build It and They Will Come"

Last Friday night, I was blessed by attending an event at my former church, St. John's Episcopal, in Kissimmee, Florida. The congregation was celebrating the completion of the renovation of their historic chapel, prayer garden, and events area. The chapel is over 100 years old, and is the second oldest church in Kissimmee. It stands on a prominent corner, "perched" under 300-year old oak trees. Although rather plain on the outside, the chapel's interior is beautifully adorned with decorative wood accents and stained glass windows. But its history is beautiful, as well. As Father Cecil, my former Rector, said: "The building is not just a church, but represents thousands of people who have worshipped there. If you step in that building you can feel the prayers."

When Bill and I left Kissimmee for Naples 5 years ago, I was concerned with the condition of the chapel. At a minimum, it needed a new roof, foundation repairs, and to be repainted. Unfortunately, the funds were just not there. However, about 2 years ago, the congregation decided to step out in faith, believing that once they started to renovate the chapel, the funds would materialize.   And their faithfulness was rewarded. As the chapel was rebuilt, so was the congregation. A number of people, who were curious about the building project, stopped at the church for a tour, and later became new church members. Giving from the entire congregation increased, and the $60,000 required to complete the renovation was raised without incurring any debt.

When I was at the Friday night event, held to re-dedicate the prayer garden near the chapel, I could detect a deeper sense of unity in the congregation. It was wonderful to fellowship with the over 100 people in attendance at this dedication, dine on hamburgers and hotdogs, and watch a movie together in a large events tent. As I took one last look at the chapel before I left, I added another prayer: "Thank you God for your faithfulness to your faithful people. Amen."

Fr. Alden's Leaf -  Tallis Canon

I often process to the first three verses of this hymn at Saturday 5:30 Eucharist. A little research revealed a full text, that deserves a time for our meditation. I hope everyone finds inspiration from it.

ALL PRAISE TO THEE, MY GOD, THIS NIGHT

All praise to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light!
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath Thine own almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done,
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed.
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the judgment day.

O may my soul on Thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close,
Sleep that may me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake.

When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.

O when shall I, in endless day,
For ever chase dark sleep away,
And hymns divine with angels sing,
All praise to thee, eternal King?

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Friend Fact: When Callie moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Olivia gave her a stuffed dog (named Elvis) as a welcome gift and Callie still sleeps with the dog every night. When they were 10, Callie made Olivia a pottery vase that Olivia still uses to this day as a toothbrush holder!

      Noted author Jim Marion, states "the essential purpose of religion is to accelerate growth in consciousness." Our Christian formation program is dedicated to this very growth.

      This Epiphany season a 7 week series, Breathing Under Water, will meet in the Willis Community Room on Wednesdays, January 21 thru March 4, from 10:30 to noon. The title of the series comes from the name of the study book by Richard Rohr.

      All of us are awash in conflicting expectations, questions, confusing suggestions and high season busy-ness. Many of us long for a way to swim in the ocean of life rather than feel as if we're drowning in its tsunami. Some even say, "What tsunami?" yet wonder why they can't breathe. Rather than waste energy fighting the weighty habits that drag us under, Rohr holds that the key is learning to breathe under water.

     From the study book:

  • Watch your thoughts; they become words.

  • Watch your words; they become actions.

  • Watch your actions; they become habits.

  • Watch your habits; they become character.

  • Watch your character; it becomes your destiny."(Anonymous)

  •

  • Come! Learn how to watch.

      These sessions are being facilitated by FAST (our Faith and Spirit Team). The first session, January 21st, at 10:30 AM sharp will provide an overview. Those committing to subsequent sessions will register for $20.00 which includes the book and materials. "First one's free," as we say in the marketing industry! Put this on your calendar. More information will be forthcoming.

St. Mark's Artists in Residence

Art in the Office

It is always a dilemma for me concerning what to get Nan for Christmas. She does so much for us all that each year I try to find some small special way to thank her. As I pondered this year, knowing as I hope you all do by now, that we the Artists in Residence have quite a display of works in the church office, I thought I'd give her the gift of art. So, knowing how much Nan loves angels having a personal angel of her own in heaven, I decided to make her one of clay. However, I knew we would not be in town for the holiday.

I went in on the Saturday before Christmas while no one was there and installed the gift on the wall behind Nan's desk even though I would rather she not see it early. She went in and out of the office every day and interestingly enough never saw it until Christmas Eve. She even asked the office volunteer that day "Was that hanging here all week?" I was in Ohio when she called to tell me that the Holy Spirit had kept our secret until that very moment. I believe that is true. Stop by and have a look at Nan's very personal clay angel. ST. MARK'S ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE ARE SEEKING PATRONS for a new Sanctuary art offering that is planned for after Easter 2015, the Season of Resurrection.

St. Mark's Artists in Residence are very busy at work creating something special for the Sanctuary this spring. Working with a medium new to all, we are very excited about the Biblical stories we will be able to portray for meditation and enjoyment.  The new display will be installed for that first Sunday after Easter in each Sanctuary window.  The artists are interpreting once again, the beautiful verses written by Fr. Kyle and sung by the ever wonderful Shane Totten.  Cost to sponsor a window is $350 and of course, your sponsorship may be used to commemorate or memorialize the family member or loved one of your choice.  Or, if you would simply like to support the project with a donation of any size, please call the office or contact Janet DeAnna at jdnamarco@aol.comor 239-394-8287.
