December 2015

T empe Community Action Agency (TCAA) is about reaching out a helping hand to the most vulnerable in our community. Our home-delivered meals program currently serves 200 homebound seniors and disabled adults five days a week. These nutritious meals, as well as the personal interaction served with them, are essential in allowing these individuals to continue to live in their own homes. More than 40 volunteers provide half of our delivery services, assisting part-time staff with 12 different routes.

As we come to the end of the tax year, please consider making a donation to TCAA to help us continue and expand programs like home-delivered meals. If you haven't already taken advantage of the Arizona Tax Credit, it's not too late to help us without spending anything! Donate Here.

Your financial support makes a real difference and is very appreciated!

Regards,

Bill Epps

TCAA Action Hero: Shari Hamblin

After her retirement, Shari Hamblin initially spent time completing a list of jobs in her home and yard that she had always wanted to get done. But, once those were finished, she decided to look for a way to volunteer. "I enjoy meeting people," Hamblin says. "I saw an ad in the Tempe section of the Arizona Republic looking for volunteers to drive/deliver meals for Tempe Community Action Agency."

So, in 2006, Shari went to talk with the agency to learn more. Kathy Flores took her along on a meal delivery route. "I enjoyed meeting these clients, mostly elderly, and I decided to volunteer."

Since then, Shari has delivered thousands of nutritious meals to the homebound. She is scheduled to deliver meals to clients once a week, but she also delivers on other days if needed. "We make sure they get a meal, that they are okay, and we spend a little time talking to them," she says. "We probably are the only person they see all day. I try to brighten their day some and I enjoy spending time with them, getting to know them and gaining new friends."

Her advice  to anyone considering volunteer work is to "think of something you really enjoy -- like working with older people, children, animals or families in need. Or, perhaps you prefer something behind the scenes. If you do something you enjoy, you'll find volunteering as a reward, not a job."

Trick or Treat!

Turkeys for the Tables
Of TCAA Clients

TCAA's food pantry was filled with Thanksgiving turkeys thanks to generous donations from  Edward Jones  and  Safeway .

Thank you for helping us reach our goal of filling all of the food bags that we distribute for Thanksgiving with a turkey and holiday food items!

Keep Phoenix Beautiful!

Keep Phoenix Beautiful dedicates its efforts to recycling initiatives and education, litter reduction, beautification, and community improvement activities. As part of a city-wide effort to clean up public spaces, 75 volunteers of all ages came to help with neighborhood cleanup surrounding the Escalante Garden and Community Center. TCAA looks forward to participating again next year.
