Greetings!                             November 2011

Congratulations! The Donate Life - Texas Registry reached a major milestone this month - 2 million people in the state of Texas registered as organ, eye and tissue donors. While across the nation, the goal of reaching 100 million registered donors was met.

As we celebrate these achievements, the need for life-saving transplants continues to rise. Even with the millions of people registered across the United States, many will die waiting for a transplant that will not come in time. Each person that registers as a donor provides hope to the more than 112,000 men, women, and children who are currently in need of a transplant - 10,800 of those live in the state of Texas.

These milestones would not have been possible had it not been for the hundreds of hours dedicated by transplant recipients, donor families, healthcare professionals and the transplantation and donation community. Together, we were able to educate and register many participants at health fairs, run/walks, best practices classes, phone banks, as well as students and employees from many of our community organizations. And let us not forget our media friends who featured our countless stories on television, radio, newspaper and magazines.

Thank you to our Central and South Texas Friends for Life partners for the countless hours that were dedicated to assisting fellow citizens in becoming a registered organ, eye and tissue donor.  The importance of each hour we commit to work together brings us closer to saving and/or enhancing a life.

Once again, thank you, your commitment and dedication does not go unnoticed.

Upcoming Donor Awareness Campaigns

National Donor Sabbath Weekend (November 11 - 13) is an annual three day period set aside to raise awareness about the critical need for organ and tissue donors and encourage individuals to become registered donors and share their decision about donation with family members today - in order to save lives tomorrow.

On behalf of the over 112,000 people currently awaiting a life-saving organ transplant, TOSA is encouraging congregations to participate in this important event by recognizing and celebrating life and honoring those who gave, as well as devote a service to organ and tissue donation. For more information about how to participate in this campaign, visit

http://www.txorgansharing.org/comOutreach/donorSabbath.php

National Donate Life Month (April 2012) is celebrated nationwide each April, presents a wonderful occasion for transplant recipients and their loved ones to express gratitude for the life-giving act of organ donation and remind the public of the need that still exists for many other people.

The general public, as well as corporate citizens are encouraged to contact the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance to learn how they can create a donor friend workplace and community. For more information about how to participate in this campaign, visit
