Purcell Marian Family News
GO RED!!

Welcome back, Cavalier parents!  You are what makes Purcell Marian such a great place to be.  Already in the first week, you've been on hand to help our students share the pride of having an alumnus Olympian, and given our teachers a great kick off to the year with your gifts of coffee and treats.
For those new to The Castle, be sure and get involved in our parents' organization P3 -- their enthusiasm is infectious!
In this issue, please pay particular attention to information about our new school management system, RenWeb, as well as important dates and information about Meet the Teacher night and parent conferences.  You can find a complete calendar for the year on our website, or by clicking here.

As always, we look forward to a year of spiritual, academic and personal growth for all of our students.  Thank you again for a great start to the year!

SAVE the DATE :
Meet the Teacher Night is Wednesday, September 7.  The program begins at 7:00 and will run until 9:30. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet your child's teachers.  Teachers are looking forward to sharing with you, their expectations in terms of performance, homework, and study; the goals for the class; helpful hints that promote success and much more.  We will begin the evening by gathering in Alumni Hall.  We hope to see on Wednesday evening!
Planning ahead the dates for Parent/Teacher Conferences are below.  You will want to put these in your calendar:
  • November 10:  3:30-5:30 and 6:00 to 8:30
  • January 18: 2:30-5:00
  • April 5:  2:30-5:00
Parent Teacher conferences are by appointment.  Parents can make those appointments through the Main Office.

Begin with the End in Mind
Each year school begins with teachers encouraging students to set high goals for themselves for this year.  There are stepping stones to mark students' progress towards achieving those goals.  One of the most significant is the report card.  Encourage your child to strive to meet the first indicator of positive progress towards achievement of the goals:

At each grading period, an honor roll is published.  Encourage your child to strive to be on Honor Roll.  There are 3 levels of Honors:

DEANS LIST - Students have an academic average of 90% and are taking at least three advanced level courses.  Advanced classes are weighted. Students may have no failing, incomplete, or unsatisfactory grades.

FIRST HONORS - Students have an academic average of 90% or above and no failing, incomplete, or unsatisfactory grades.

SECOND HONORS - Students have an academic average of 85% or above and no failing or unsatisfactory grades.

Students that merit Dean's List or First Honors for 3 quarters are invited to the Academic Banquet that is held in May.  In addition, students that merit Dean's List or First Honors for all quarters for each year are designated as Honor Graduates and are recognized at graduation for this accomplishment.  Let's begin with the end in mind!

I am looking forward to a great year, if there is anything I can do please do not hesitate to send me an email or give me a call at 487-3101.

Social Skill for Success:
Purcell Marian is in its third three of utilizing the Boystown Well Managed School
Model.  It is a prosocial skill training method emphasizing at least 16 marketable skills for success in school, and the workplace.  This method promotes a common, consistent language and procedure to teach theses social skills that will help all become successful Cavaliers.  We will be highlighting a skill each week.

Following Instructions is this week's skill of the week.  Any time a student is given an instruction they should follow these steps:
#1. Look at the person
#2. Say Okay
#3. Do what has been asked right away
#4. Check back
Please visit the parent website for Boystown at http://www.parenting.org .  We will be highlighting one of the skills each week in the parent newsletter.

Student Parking
There are parking spaces available for student parking in the south lot and behind the school by the football field.  All students who wish to qualify for the student parking lottery must have their registration form completed and submitted by noon on Wednesday August 24th.  There is also a parking fee of $100 which is not due until you have been selected for a spot.  See Mr. Tobin to get a registration form.

New Parent Tip Sheet :
Check our parent newsletter weekly for updates involving student life.
  • The daily school schedules can be found in the back of the student handbook.  A reminder that every Wednesday is an early dismissal day with school ending at 1:55 pm.  Students who are waiting to take the busses need to wait outside or in the cafeteria until the busses arrive.
  • Students can be dropped off in the morning to either the Main Entrance located on Hackberry St. or the South Entrance located by the South Parking Lot.
  • Students arriving before 7:30 am need to report to the Cafeteria.  A reminder that school begins at 7:45 am.
  • Parents can pick up students after school at the South Entrance.  All students need to be out of the building unless with a teacher or coach.
  • If a student needs to leave school early, please call or send a note with your child in the morning before school.
  • If you are bringing a student's lunch to school please take it to the main office by 10:45 am to ensure the student receives it.
Below are some general student life policy updates and reminders

ABSENCE PROCEDURES:
Custodial parents and legal guardians are the sole authority for permitting students to miss school on scheduled school days.  It should be understood that class time is a vital factor in a student being able to successfully complete courses.  Students should only miss school in extreme situations such as a serious illness, serious family situations, etc.  If a student must be absent from school THE CUSTODIAL PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN MUST:
*             Call the attendance office at 487-3107 on the morning of the absence and every morning thereafter until the student returns to school.  Please call the office before 9:00 am.  Parents should request homework at this time to allow teachers ample time to send work down to the office.  Homework may be picked up at the office between 2:45-4:00 pm.  (After 9:00 am it becomes increasingly difficult for our staff to get your child's work in time.)
*             Provide the student with a written-signed letter of excuse stating the cause and dates of the absences.  The student should submit this to the Attendance Secretary before returning to classes.  The letter will be kept in the student's individual file.  A doctor's note or parents note can be required if the student is absent for 3 consecutive days due to illness.  If a doctor/parent note is not received, the absence remains an unexcused absence.
*             If students are required to leave school early, they must bring a note from the parent or guardian explaining the reason and the time for the release.  Dentist or doctor appointments should be made on days when there is no school or after school hours so that the student does not miss valuable class time.
Know that a student will receive a Saturday detention if they accumulate 10 unexcused absences in one semester.

TARDY POLICY:
Students must be inside his/her Homeroom each day before the Homeroom Bell rings at 7:45 am.  If a student is not inside Homeroom before the bell rings, then that student will receive an all school tardy.
Students are given up to 4 unexcused tardies a quarter without disciplinary action.
5 or more tardies results in an after school detention
10 or more tardies results in a cleaning detention and demerit.
15 or more tardies results in a Saturday detention.

CELL PHONE POLICY:
All personal audio or visual electronic devices are to be in the "off" position and put away during the school day, from the beginning of homeroom to the end of 8th bell.  Cell phones should not be seen, or heard throughout the school day.
The faculty and staff can give permission to students to use their cell phones for an academic purpose.  At no time during the school day should students be on their cell phones without the permission of a teacher.

If a student has an electronic device out without permission the item will be confiscated and the student will be allowed to pick it up at the end of the day for a monetary cost.  First infractions will cost $1 to get phone back, second infraction $2, etc. All money will go toward student activities.

If this behavior becomes a pattern consequences for a serious infraction will be given and the student may have their cell phone confiscated in the main office until the parent or guardian picks it up.

Parents can pick the cell phones from the main office during normal school hours with the latest time being 4:00pm.  Purcell Marian will not be responsible for confiscated items.

If a student refuses to give the electronic device to the staff member, the student will receive an office referral.

SATURDAY DETENTION:
Saturday Detention is held from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm and the students will be notified of the specific date that they
are to serve.  See the student handbook to view infractions deserving of a Saturday detention.  There is a $20.00 fee for  each Saturday Detention that the students must bring with them when they attend.  All school rules including dress code apply to Saturday  Detention.  Students will not be permitted late.  Any student who is late will be (1) sent home (2) receive no credit for the time (3) be assigned an additional Saturday Detention.  Students must bring enough work to keep busy for the full three hour period.  Students who fail to have enough work will be dismissed and not receive credit for time served.  Students will remain seated and quiet.  Student must raise their hands and be recognized to ask questions or speak.  Students will receive breaks to use the rest room, sharpen pencils, get drinks, etc.

The only acceptable excuse from a Saturday Detention is illness verified by parental contact.  If a student is ill on  the Saturday morning on which he/she was to serve, the parent must call the Dean of Student Life's office  Saturday morning.  The Saturday Detention will be re-scheduled.

Students will not receive grades, be registered for next year's classes, or in the case of graduating seniors, receive  diplomas or have final transcripts sent to colleges until all detentions/Saturday obligations have been met.

HIGHLIGHTED DRESS CODE POLICIES:
BODY PIERCING - No visible body piercing, other than the ears, is permitted. All other facial piercing is not
permissible.  Students will be asked to remove all piercings that are considered unacceptable.  Failure to comply
will result in the student being sent home.

HAIR - Must be neatly trimmed and groomed at all times.  Purcell Marian students are to have natural hair color only.   Natural highlights are acceptable.  Extreme hairstyles (for example-designs, Mohawks, etc.) and hair coloring (for  example-any unnatural hair colors, multi-colors, designs, etc.) are not appropriate and are not acceptable for school.
Hairstyles that violate the dress code, will receive 1 all school detention and 1 demerit for the first offense.  Repeated  violation will be considered a serious infraction.  Please check with Mr. Tobin before you adopt a new and/or
questionable hairstyle.

The cross country team is always looking for more runners, both boys and girls.  Practices have already started, but it is not too late for your son or daughter to join the team.  Previous experience is not necessary.  All that is re
quired is a positive attitude.  There is no better conditioning for the winter sports of basketball, wrestling and swimming than running in the fall.  Contact Coach Roberts at [email protected] or 513-258-4906 with any questions or to sign your runner up!
