  From the Science Department

Students in science class worked on the 'Marshmallow Challenge' during the first week of school.  Each group is given a limited amount of supplies (tape, string, raw spaghetti and 1 marshmallow).  The goal is to build the tallest free standing structure that will support the marshmallow.  It is a fun exercise in teamwork, creativity and problem solving.

P hysics students also recently explored motion using a ramp and steel ball (similar to what Galileo used) and in launching a rocket.  They needed to design the experiment themselves  and come up with at least 2 methods to determine the height of the rocket at the peak of its flight.

Drug Prevention at Purcell Marian
Voluntary Participation for the 2016-17 School Year
As was introduced at the end of last school year, Purcell Marian will be implementing a Drug Prevention Program beginning this year.  Participation for the 2016-17 school year will be strictly voluntary, but will become a standard expectation for subsequent years.

Learn more about the program, and sign up online by clicking the link below.  Many Purcell Marian administrators, faculty and staff members have also voluntarily signed up to participate for the inaugural year to assist in demonstrating the importance of the program, which gives students an easy way to opt out of drug experimentation and use by simply saying, "I can't -- my school drug tests!"

Social Skill for Success:
Purcell Marian is in its third year of utilizing the Boystown Well Managed School
Model.  It is a prosocial skill training method emphasizing at least 16 marketable skills for success in school, and the workplace.  This method promotes a common, consistent language and procedure to teach theses social skills that will help all become successful Cavaliers.  We will be highlighting a skill each week.

Staying On Task is this week's skill of the week. Any time a student is given a task they should follow these steps:
#1. Look at your task or assignment
#2. Think about the steps needed to complete the task
#3. Focus all your attention on the task
#4. Stop working only when instructed
#5. Ignore distractions and interruptions form others

Please visit the parent website for Boystown at http://www.parenting.org .  We will be highlighting one of the skills each week in the parent newsletter.

Students wishing to obtain a spot should contact Mr. Tobin.

Cavaliers at Local Businesses

Please continue to help communicate with your children that students need to be respectful to the businesses in the neighborhood around Purcell Marian.  Students who are visiting these businesses need to make sure to use appropriate voice levels and not to loiter.  Overall our students do a wonderful job in this area.
