SYMPOSIUM BROCHURE NOW AVAILABLE
SYMPOSIUM EARLY BIRD RATE ENDS SOON
ARTICLE BY DR. GENE GRIFFIN

In the past month, we have "met" more of you, face to face that is, through our use of video conferencing! Our NMT Training Certification programs are now utilizing video conferencing to facilitate study groups comprised of a small collection of organizations  or individuals in training and an NMT Mentor.  As we host orientation meetings for these newly forming study groups, we are communicating with colleagues from across the world in an entirely new way.  Our utilization of video conferencing for training purposes is just beginning. We think this is an important addition to our Neurosequential Model certification process. Learning, communication, and sharing are most effective in the context of healthy and supportive relationships, and we hope that "seeing" all of you - whether during an online training or at the Symposium in Banff next June - will help foster even stronger relationships in our professional community.
2016 Symposium Brochure and Preliminary Schedule Now Available

Based on the feedback from our last symposium, delegates indicated a strong interest in learning more about how other professionals are incorporating the Neurosequential Model into their work.  We are happy to say we have been able to accommodate this input as we have developed the program for the 2 nd International Neurosequential Model Symposium. We experienced an overwhelming response to our Call for Papers, and we are very excited to include a great number of presentations from those who wish to share their work with the Neurosequential Model community.  A preliminary Symposium Brochure is now available and includes an overview of the 3-day schedule. Additional details including a complete schedule of presenters and activities as well as biographies and session information for Featured Speakers will be added soon.

The Convergence of U.S. Juvenile Justice Policies and the U.N. Convention On The Rights Of The Child
by Gene Griffin and Paula Wolff

The United States is the only country in the world not to have ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).  Nonetheless, our juvenile justice system can work to attain the relevant principles that the CRC lays out. This article identifies issues where our juvenile justice system seems to have reached consensus with the CRC (incorporating concepts of child development and focusing on rehabilitation); issues where we need to more explicitly incorporate the CRC (principles for detaining youth and solitary confinement); and issues where we are implicitly incorporating the CRC (indiscriminate shackling and developing a trauma-informed juvenile justice system). In addition, this article offers specific examples of each issue (including citations to the ChildTrauma Academy and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network), demonstrating that these principles can be applied at a state and local level. Should the U.S. continue to incorporate the CRC principles, the end result could be a more effective juvenile justice system joining with other child-serving systems to achieve a developmentally healthier and higher functioning child. These are rights of the child worth striving for.
