A Message From Our President & CEO: Raising
Capital is More than Fundraising
Aggie Sweeney,
CFRE
How can nonprofits secure the capital
they need for growth? By "capital," I refer to the broader concept
of capital, including facilities, equipment and endowments, but am
not stopping there. Expanding the definition of capital
incorporates resources for program expansion, investments in
innovation to advance promising ideas in research and service
delivery, and start-up funds for mission-related
enterprises.
The
recent recession and changes in the financial sector have created
both a squeeze on nonprofits' capacity to secure traditional
financing and new innovative solutions. The availability of
nonprofit bond financing - which essentially disappeared at the end
of 2008 - is returning. Traditional bank financing is an option for
some, but underwriting is stringent and costs are high. While
federal stimulus funds for "shovel-ready" capital projects were an
option for some nonprofits and many projects advanced to
groundbreaking as a result, those funds and other sources of
government capital are increasingly difficult to secure.
So,
what new sources for social impact investing are emerging?

Harbor
History Museum Opens
Stuart Grover, Ph.D., Chairman
Emeritus
On
September 15th, the Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor
held their sneak preview for 175 of its major donors and
volunteers. Over the next few days, more than 2600 people from
throughout Western Washington flocked to the new museum, giving it
rave reviews and doubling its membership rolls.
The
museum is terrific-starting with architect David Boe's adaptation
of a former warehouse, but also offering well-designed and
interesting exhibits, great education spaces (including an actual
one-room schoolhouse moved with help from Gig Harbor Rotary), and a
covered area where they're restoring a fishing boat. It's
interactive and participatory, offering visitors the opportunity to
read a letter from an early settler or help restore the fishing
boat. Currently, they're hosting an exhibit of American flags,
which will soon be part of the Smithsonian traveling exhibit
program.

Medical Teams
International SucceedsDespite
Recession Challenges
Kristin
Barsness, Ph.D., CFRE, Vice President
Capital
campaigns always require some leaps of faith, but perhaps never so
much as during the height of the recession from
2008-2009. Nonprofits in the middle of campaigns were faced with a
stark reality: with investments down, nearly all potential donors
were feeling cautious and seemingly no safe harbor was at
hand. Some organizations declared victory at the mid-point and
ended their campaigns; others opted for a hiatus and waited for the
economy to improve. A few soldiered on quietly, but with
determination - and that's where Medical Teams International's
story begins.
