As we start the new year my thoughts go in lots of different directions.  Gratitude is the primary theme, mostly gratitude for relationships that help to shape my life.

Though they are now thirty-three and thirty-five years old, as a dad it doesn't seem all that long ago that I was tucking my kids into bed at night, reading them a story, and saying prayers with them.

We had a verse prayer that Jeanne taught them that either she or I said with them every night:
Father in heaven, hear my prayer;
Keep me in thy loving care.
Be my guide in all I do;
Bless all those who love me too.
Then we'd listen to what Robbie and Kimberly called their "thank God time".  And they always had a lot of people/animals/things for which to thank God:  their mom and me, each other, their grandparents, our pets, and whoever and whatever else they felt particularly connected with at the time.  Those were very special times.  Sometimes I miss those times.  Sometimes I miss them a lot.

I love connecting with my kids.  It's an especially great experience, of course, when they're doing well, but even when they're not, I want to know what's going on with them.  I want to hear their voices.  I want to be able to "be with them" in whatever ways they will allow me to.  The role has changed.  We don't read stories and say prayers together at night any more.  They're not around where I can see them and talk in person every day.  But I'm still their dad.  It's a role that I cherish deeply, one that I always will.

Sometimes I am struck by the parallels between my relationship as father to my children and God's relationship as father to us.  Oh, I know there's danger in this analogy.  It's certainly far from a precise one.  The most obvious shortcoming of this comparison is that I am not perfect as a parent.  At age 63, I'm a dad who is in touch with lots of ways in which my own shortcomings and unhealthiness got in the way of being the best that I could be for my children.

Yet I've always loved them, no matter what.  Despite my shortcomings, I've always loved those two babies, those two toddlers, those two children, those two preteens, those two teenagers, those two adults more than I possibly could begin to describe.  I've always wanted the best for them.  I've always wanted to do whatever I was able to do to show them my love.  I've always wanted to "be there" for them, to listen to them and support them, to share with them, to laugh with them, to cry with them.

Again, the analogy in many senses is a weak one, but the depth with which I love my children may be the closest I can come to grasping the depth with which God loves me, and you, and every human being.  God is a parent who always wants to be a part of our lives -- when things are going well for us and when they're not - to connect with us, to listen to us.  God is a parent whose deep love for us never falters.  God always wants the best for us, always wants to "be there" for us, to laugh with us, to cry with us.

The blatant flaw in the analogy, of course, is that God's love is perfect love.  It has no shortcomings, no weaknesses.  It is whole.  It is complete.  It is pure.  It is eternal.  As Paul reminds us in Romans 8, its embrace is one from which we can never be separated.

Happy New Year!

Grace and Peace,

Clergy Oasis Day
Thursday, March 31st
9:00 am - 4:00pm

Dr. Steve Harper will lead us in a time of personal renewal that he has labeled "Oasis Day".  Please calendar this date today and plan to engage in this special time together.  Location to be announced soon. I look forward to seeing you at this event.  If you are not able to participate because of a commitment this far out, please respond soon and let me know.

A great prelude to the Clergy Oasis Day would be to read Steve Harper's book, 'Five Marks of a Methodist,' which is now accompanied by study guides written by Magrey deVega and a six-session DVD.  The study is designed to help individuals and groups deepen their discipleship by becoming more-deeply rooted in our Wesleyan tradition.  For more information and to order from Cokesbury, Click HERE.

Church and Pastor Annual Profiles
UMC Logo Church Profile and Pastor Profile forms should be reviewed and updated annually by all church SPRC Committees and all Clergy in the Florida Conference.  Though a move may not be anticipated, it is important that both the Pastor Profile and Church Profile be current at the appointment-making session of the cabinet.  Profiles should be an honest reflection of the pastoral ministry and the profile of the church.

If a change in pastoral leadership is being considered for July 1, 2016 - the pastor and SPRC Chair should be in contact with the DS or Janet Kelley no later than January 15th to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Bob Bushong.  If a pastoral consultation is scheduled with the DS, both the Church Profile and Pastor Profile should be completed online no later than one week prior to the consultation appointment.

To access Church and Pastor Profiles, click the Profiles Link under Forms at the bottom of the Home Page of the Florida Conference website www.flumc.org.  The link opens to detailed instructions for accessing both profiles.  The final submission date for profiles is January 31, 2016.

Missional Vital Signs (MVS) changes for 2016
Happy New Year!  This is a time for re-starts, refresh, and do-overs.  It is time of reflection of the previous year and anticipation of life's journey ahead.  2016 will start with some new vital signs data being collected.

Here are the changes STARTING JANUARY 2016:
Online Viewing:  This number measures online viewing of a worship service by the number of clicks the first week after posting of the service (data collected previous week).

Special Services:  The number of people who attend a service that is infrequent, not usual - beyond regular weekly services.  (Wednesday night services counted with AWA if weekly all year long.)  Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Revival Service, Church Homecoming, Remembrance Service, Longest Night/Blue Christmas, Musicals, Healing Service, Blessing of the Animals, and Baptism Service (if held separately from a regular service and has all the components of worship).

Commitments to Christ (Evangelism):  This number represents number of persons making a first-time commitment to Christ (not the same as POF).

Salty Service (Change of definition):  For measurement purposes, count the number of persons serving through church ministries to the community.  People serve other people in many ways and the work is very important (Rotary, Guardian Ad Litem, hospital volunteers).  for our purpose of evaluating the health of the church, we are focusing on the outreach ministries through the church.

A Message from Alice Williams, District Lay Leader
Welcome to 2016 - a year that I hope brings much happiness, health and blessings your way!  So often at the start of the year we make resolutions to better ourselves in some way.  Did you know that about 45% of us will make a New Year's resolution?  That's actually a pretty good statistic!  The problem is that only about 10% actually see their resolution through - so much for good intentions.  We resolve to do really good things like lose weight, improve our finances, exercise, eat healthier, improve our relationships and stop procrastinating.  Isn't it interesting that so few of our resolutions involve nurturing what may be the most important part of ourselves, and probably if you are like me, the area that could use it most - our spiritual-self?  My hope is that this year, your resolution list will include something - some practice or event that will help your growth in the Spirit.  It may be just the practice of making more time daily for prayer.  Maybe you decide to join a small group or a Bible study.  Or you commit to finding a way to be in ministry to those around you.  Perhaps you help start a Fresh Expression within your area.  Whatever you choose, I hope you will join me in making a resolution that sticks.  One that will help you to let your light shine even brighter in 2016!

Grace and peace,
Alice

A Message from Jeff Campbell, District Disaster Coordinator
It started two years ago.  Our daughter was having a baby.  My first thought was to build her a rocking chair.  It has been 20 years since I had a woodworking project of that proportion.  Rockers are quite personal in fitting and a distance of 1265.3 miles (according to Google) separated us; not a good obstacle to try and overcome.  This decision was reached during the first trimester.  We then decided to build something for the baby.  Great grandma on her daddy's side had dibs on the bed situation. Click HERE to continue reading.

Missio Ecclesia
February 17-19, 2016 - Grace UMC, Cape Coral

Discover WHY and HOW the people of God can join Jesus on mission!
Hosted at Grace Church Cape Coral Campus, 13 SE 21st Place, Cape Coral, FL

Joining Jesus in His mission requires a new way of being and doing the church. Leading the church whether as a clergy or layperson is tremendously challenging in our post-Christian culture. At Missio Ecclesia/Church on Mission, we will continue this conversation with two missional pioneers who are not just theorists but practitioners. We will be challenged, stretched, enraged, comforted and equipped to lead our churches into mission for Jesus.

Missio Ecclesia: A "Church on Mission" Conference will be hosted by Grace - Cape Coral and will be led by speakers Alan and Deb Hirsch of the Forge Mission Training Network. This key event in 2016 is for both Clergy and Church Lay Leadership.

In preparation and to help you stir interest among your leaders attached below is a bulletin insert we hope you will use along with personally inviting your key leaders to join you at this conference. Please help us promote this exciting event by also including it in your January newsletter, on your website and other communication media.

"R-10 and Counting" video - Clergy pre-retirement

Are you ready for retirement?  Do you know how much income you'll have in retirement?  How about your health insurance options, or strategies to maximize your Social Security benefits?

Answers to those questions and more were the focus of the Florida United Methodist Foundation's recent "R-10 and Counting" pre-retirement seminar, held annually for clergy who are within 10 years of retiring.

If you're in that countdown and weren't able to attend the September session or just want to learn all you can to be better prepared for retirement, you can still benefit from the information provided by viewing videos of the seminar's presentations on the foundation's YouTube channel.

Go to www.youtube.com/user/FloridaUMF and click on "playlists" in the menu bar under the page image and then on the playlist title.  Each video will be listed there.  Some are specific to soon-to-be retirees.  Others, like the Social Security, housing options and long-term care presentations, provide insights for people at any stage of their career.

For more information about these topics, please contact Tom Wilkinson, the foundation's vice president of church relations and new business, at twilkinson@fumf.org or 863-904-2970, extension 7105.

The Mary Retreat - A Sabbath Retreat for Women
Life Enrichment Center (LEC)
How are you caring for the busy women in your church?  On your staff?  Leading your ministries?

The Mary Retreat is a great way to give the busy women in your world an opportunity to take a step away from the hustle and bustle and just "be" for a weekend.

Every time we host a Mary Retreat, women share with me that their lives are changed - not by dynamic speakers or powerful worship (because we don't do that at the Mary Retreat) - but by the opportunity to be still and really, truly rest.

Be sure your Sabbath time is sacred in 2016 - register now for April or November retreats!

April 22 - 24, 2016
November 11 - 13, 2016

Visit the LEC Website for more information and to register!  The November 2015 retreat filled nearly three months in advance, so register now to ensure your spot for 2016!

Telling our Stories
Once again the Annual Conference is looking for storytellers who will share VIDEO and WRITTEN stories about becoming disciples of Jesus Christ or on our AC2016 theme, Leading Like Jesus, to publish in its weekly feature "Telling Our Stories".

We want stories about who we are, what God is doing in our lives and when we have seen someone leading like Jesus.  Share stories about how we are ordinary people trying our best, with God's help, to point our feet toward being Jesus' disciples every day.  And, we want stories about how we don't get it right every time, we aren't perfect, and we also have mountaintop experiences.

Storytelling Guidelines
  • Length:  400-700 words
  • Videos are welcomed!  Please, no more than 5 minutes.
  • Focus on how you or someone you know is following the path of discipleship or how you have seen leadership similar to Jesus' in your journey.

To Tell Your Story
Please Click HERE to go to our story submission page to send us your contact information and your story.
