By now, many of you have seen the announcement that was made in January on the Florida Conference website regarding the transition that will be taking place in the district this summer.  I will be coming off the cabinet and returning to serve as a local church pastor after serving 7 years as a District Superintendent and Dr. Bob Bushong, current pastor at First UMC of Winter Park will become the new East Central District Superintendent.  I couldn't be more pleased to see Bob take up the work of superintendency among you and I know that you and the churches of this district will be blessed by his leadership, his wisdom and his many gifts for ministry.  You can read more about Bob and his ministry in the Annual Conference later in this newsletter.  While this transition won't take place until July and while Bob is certainly not new to the EC District, I know you will want to reach out to welcome Bob to this new ministry and leadership role over the next few months.

In the meantime, the work of ministry in the district continues and one opportunity that is coming up quickly is the annual District Training event.  This event is an opportunity for pastors and laity to come together for inspiration and a time of focused learning around a variety of specific ministry topics.  We are blessed to have Rev. Dr. Rini Hernandez, Superintendent of the South West District to serve as our keynote speaker for worship as well as a workshop leader.  Rev. Hernandez will be calling us to rekindle our evangelistic passion and fervor for sharing Jesus Christ with others in the strength and power of the Holy Spirit.  We will also be hearing from Kylie Foley about Imagine No Malaria and participating in some experiences to learn and to give (bring some one dollar bills if you want to participate) to this life saving project.  A complete list of all the other workshops can be found HERE.

I hope you will make plans now to attend this event.  There are so many ways that God longs to use us and our faith communities to extend the work of the Kingdom.  The good news is we aren't called to to this work alone.  We share the journey of mission and ministry with one another and God works when we come together to worship, learn and serve.

Grace and peace,

A Message from Alice Williams, District Lay Leader
Wow, is it just me or does this year seem to be off and running at an alarming rate?  And to add to the mix, it seems like things are changing all around!  From friends and family who are experiencing career changes or health challenges to movement of beloved clergy within our District, change is truly in the air.  I recently had the opportunity to attend the Mission Impact weekend at Bethune Cookman which was an awesome event that really helped to put into perspective the notion God does indeed call us to serve in both our local communities as well as in far reaching places.  February 7th is the District Training event where we will have the opportunity to grow our skills and talents so that we are better able to serve the world around us, and I'm hoping that you will be able to join in this great event.  Each year it continues to grow in attendance as well as in the variety of training opportunities available, and has become one of my favorite EC District events.

There is a lot of change in the air but I have to be honest, I kinda like it, because with change comes new opportunities and new experiences.  That said, I'm also glad that we are anchored in the grace of God who's steadfast love does indeed endure forever.
See you on the 7th!

Disaster Preparedness Coordinator - Jeff Campbell
"There's no time like the present." How many times have you heard or said this? I, myself, struggle with this every month in getting my articles to the newsletter on time. We often make plans with the best of intentions, yet when it comes down to it something comes along and crowds out our "intentions" and sometimes our plans never even see the light of day. I've heard it said that today is called the present because it is a gift from God. We shouldn't squander such an opportunity. Also, we only get one today. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is uncertain. We make plans but it is only by the will of God that those plans are carried out. If there is something that you've been meaning to do or haven't yet found the time to do, take the time to ask yourself "Why haven't I done this?" "How important is this really?" I've put off starting projects and put relationships in a lower priority column because I felt that there would always be time to enjoy these later. I've missed many blessings by not pursuing what's most important to me.

Now is the time to take inventory of all those promises and plans you've made to yourself but haven't quite found the time to implement. Are you missing out on blessings because you felt like these things can be taken care of later? Don't let the time pass you by to receive a blessing. We only have a certain amount of days in our lives which only God knows. Don't waste a day by waiting until later to take care of that item you've thought about doing. You might not get another chance. Whether you're thinking about making your disaster plan, calling your parent or child, or telling your wife (or husband, ladies) that you love them. There's no time like the present.

Mark 10:13-16 (ESV)
13 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

As I read this scripture from the New Testament, I think of the privilege I have of being a father of four beautiful children. Our children have blessed my wife, Carla, and I beyond measure. Children are God's gift to us. Jesus knew this even on His way to the cross, as we read in this passage from Mark, Jesus made time to stop and love them and bless them.

2015 Property & Casualty Insurance
We are pleased to announce that the Florida Annual Conference has again experienced a successful property and casualty insurance program renewal. For the sixth consecutive year we have renewed the program with no increase in premium.

While your individual church allocation may vary from the prior year (due to local factors such as property appraisals, added vehicles, added buildings, additional payroll, etc.), the overall cost of the insurance program for 2015 is exactly the same as the prior five years.

The 2015 invoices are now online and can be accessed on the Conference Dashboard at, Choose "PC/Workers Comp" from the drop-down menu and enter your church's GCFA number. A packet of additional insurance information will be mailed to you in the next few days which will include the 2015 insurance summary of coverages. Go to your church dashboard to access your coverage and make updates on-line.

As in years past, if your insurance allocation is paid in full by 2/28/15, you will receive a 2% discount off of the billed amount.
