My daughter teases me about it, as do some others from time to time.  I can't explain it.  I don't know why exactly, but it's true that the older I get, the more sentimental I am becoming, the more easily I am touched in ways that evoke emotion, and the more frequently I experience tears.  The tears may come from an experience with pain and sadness or they may appear related to one of joy and peace.

As the cabinet liaison to the Board of Ordained Ministry, recently I spent a week at the Life Enrichment Center during the board's annual interview session.  We who are members of that board interacted with folks applying for the  various categories of ministry:  local pastor, provisional deacon and elder, full connection deacon and elder.  We also voted in regard to clergy who plan to retire or to go on one of a variety of categories of leave.

Several times during that week one of those candidates for ministry, and some of us on the board, shed tears.  It may have been because of nervousness or a sense of not being understood in an interview.  It may have been because of a sense of relief and joy when someone was given the news that he or she had been approved.  It may have been when someone in the room, a candidate or a board member, got in touch with some inner experience or passion that was deeply significant, even formative, in that person's life.

It was true during that recent week and it was true during every interview week in the twelve years that I served on the Board of Ordained Ministry from 1992-2004, that several times during the week tears were part of the experience.

One of my favorite contemporary Christian authors is Frederick Buechner.  (Pronounced Beek'-ner for those of you who wonder.)  Mr. Buechner has a way of writing about complex issues and concepts in down-to-earth ways that enhance their understanding.  Here's what he has to say about tears:

You never know what may cause them.  The sight of the Atlantic Ocean can do it, or a piece of music, or a face you've never seen before.  A pair of somebody's old shoes can do it.  Almost any movie made before the great sadness that came over the world after the Second World War, a horse cantering across a meadow, the high school basketball team running out onto the gym floor at the start of a game.  You can never be sure.  But of this you can be sure.  Whenever you find tears in your eyes, especially unexpected tears, it is well to pay the closest attention.  They are not only telling you something about the secret of who you are, but more often that not God is speaking to you through them of the mystery of where you have come from and is summoning you to where, if your soul is to be saved, you should go to next.

Tears are funny things.  They come for many of us with sadness and pain and heartache and grief and loneliness.  They also come with utter joy and happiness and pleasure and contentment and connectedness.  They can be used to manipulate, and they can evoke in another person an unexpected sense of compassion and empathy.  They can divide people or pull them together.  They can be confusing or distracting, and they can communicate more clearly, more deeply than any words ever could.

Like Frederick Buechner, I believe that tears can be a powerful vehicle through which God speaks to us.  When they come for me, I try to pay attention to their source.  I try to get in touch with what triggered them.  I try to let myself feel the feelings that they represent.  And often my heart is filled with gratitude - even when sadness is present - for whatever, or whomever, I have experienced in life that stirs up such powerful feelings within me.

One last quote, from Nicholas Wolterstorff in his moving little book, Lament for a Son:

I shall look at the world through tears, and perchance I shall see things that dry-eyed I never would see.

Grace and Peace and Gratitude,

A Message from Alice Williams, District Lay Leader
Greetings East Central District - I hope that January had proved to be a great start for your new year!  If January is any indication, 2016 is shaping up to be a very busy and important year in the life of the Methodist church.  One of the many things  about the Methodist church that I very much appreciate is that we are truly a "connectional" church.  We simply can do more and be more through our connection to one another.  This month we have two very key opportunities to live into that connection, and I hope you will block both on your calendar and make every effort to attend.  The first is our East Central District Training event on Saturday, February 6th, at First UMC Oviedo from 8 a.m. til 1 p.m.  This year's theme is "Remembering the Mission".  Rev. Dr. Jim Harnish will be our keynote speaker and there will be a variety of breakout sessions on various ministry topics designed to help you and your congregation.  There's still time to register by going to the FLUMC East Central District website.  I promise you this will be time well invested.

The second event is the Bishop's Conference Table Listening Session and takes place on Saturday, February 13th, at First UMC Lakeland from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  This session is designed to provide the General and Jurisdictional Conference Delegates an opportunity to listen to the concerns and topics that are of key interest to our FLUMC.  General Conference 2016 is shaping up to be pivotal in shaping our denomination's policy and perspective on many key issues facing the church.  This is an opportunity for you to help shape our delegation's understanding of how God is speaking and calling us as His body in the FLUMC.  If you are able to attend, please register at the FLUMC website for this key listening event.

Looks like February is going to be a busy month!  I hope that you will be part of the connection as we continue to seek God's calling on the UMC!

Blessings,
Alice
Calendar of Reports due for 2016
The calendar of reports due is now on the conference website.  Click HERE to review and print the calendar.  The leadership of your church should review this together, so that everyone is aware of what they are responsible for and when it is due.
Worker's Comp Audit due by February 23rd
In order to comply with State of Florida requirements related to workers' compensation coverage, we ask that you complete the brief online payroll form, located on the link below.  Please review your payroll records (941's etc.) for the calendar year 2015 and complete the form as accurately as possible.  Please note that your responses will not affect your worker's compensation insurance costs for 2016 as this updated information is simply required to comply with State of Florida regulations.  The Survey will be open until February 23rd.

Click HERE for the Worker's Compensation Payroll Survey.
2016 Ministry Protection Insurance Allocation Costs
We are pleased to announce that the Florida Annual Conference has again experienced a successful property and casualty insurance program renewal.  For the seventh consecutive year we have renewed the program with no increase in premium.

While your individual church allocation may vary from the prior year (due to local factors such as property appraisals, added vehicles, added buildings, additional payroll, etc.), the overall cost of the insurance program for 2016 is exactly the same as the prior six years.

The 2016 invoices are now online and can be accessed at the monthly reports menu
Choose "PC/Workers Comp" from the drop-down menu and enter your church's GCFA number.  A packet of additional insurance information will be mailed to you in the next few days which will include the 2016 insurance Summary of coverage's.

As in years past, if your insurance allocation is paid in full by 2/29/16, you will receive a 2% discount off of the billed amount.

Changes to Missional Vital Signs (MVS)
Here are the changes STARTING JANUARY 2016:

The MVS reports are to be completed by the 10th of each month reporting for the previous month.  While we told you of changes coming, you didn't actual SEE the changes.  You will see them when entering the numbers this month.

Online Viewing:
This number measures online viewing of a worship service by the number of clicks the first week after posting of the service (data collected previous week).

Special Services:  The number of people who attend a service that is infrequent, not usual - beyond regular weekly services.  (Wednesday night services counted with AWA if weekly all year long.)  Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Revival Service, Church Homecoming, Remembrance Service, Longest Night/Blue Christmas, Musicals, Healing Service, Blessing of the Animals, and Baptism Service (if held separately from a regular service and has all the components of worship).

Commitments to Christ (Evangelism):  This number represents number of persons making a first-time commitment to Christ (not the same as POF).

Salty Service (Change of definition):  For measurement purposes, count the number of persons serving through church ministries to the community.  People serve other people in many ways and the work is very important (Rotary, Guardian Ad Litem, hospital volunteers).  for our purpose of evaluating the health of the church, we are focusing on the outreach ministries through the church.

Calling All Amateur (Ham) Radio Operators!!
It was August 24, 1992 I was tired, hungry and could not wait to grab a shower and a few hours of uninterrupted sleep in my own bed.  I had just spent eighteen hours at a shelter operating the Amateur (Ham) Radio station linking the City of Immokalee with the Collier County Emergency Operations Center in Naples.  Just as I had my home in site, a call came over the radio.  It was a Ham operator in the Florida Keys.  They had no electricity and no telephone or cell phone service and they were desperate to let their families who lived outside of Florida know that they were OK, that they had survived the storm.  So, for the next couple of hours that shower and nap would just have to wait, but what a blessing it was to be able to call people all over the country and let them know that their families in the Florida Keys were OK.  The Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church has a whole department dedicated to helping people who find themselves in need after a disaster.  Pam Garrison is the Disaster Response Coordinator for the Florida Conference and she has numerous disaster teams who share the love of Christ with people who are trying to recover from the effects of a disaster.  However, oftentimes in the aftermath of a disaster normal communications either are overwhelmed or out of service and our Disaster Recovery ministries have no way of knowing what kind of help is needed to provide targeted relief.  That is where Amateur (Ham) Radio comes in.  That is why I am asking pastors and church leaders to check with the members of their congregations and ask anyone who is a licensed Amateur to contact me to sign up with the Florida United Methodist Disaster Relief Network.  I can be reached at 239-657-2841 or at n5kfr@aol.com.  Being a member of our team does not require people to spend time in shelters or travel however, we do need to increase the size of our network so that when disaster strikes, together we can be the hands and feet of Jesus for people who desperately need our help.

Thom Street is N5KFR and Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church of Immokalee.

Around The Conference
CCYM - Dare to SPARK
February 12-14, 2016 - Warren W. Willis
Dare to SPARK is a student leadership training retreat for students by students.  This is a great event to bring your student leaders (or those whom you'd like to become students leaders) to, in whatever form that takes in your local church.  For some that is their whole youth group, for others it is a core group of leadership students.  Whichever way you choose to use it, this weekend will be a blessing to you and your leaders!  We will engage in worship, workshops, fellowship time, and round table discussion regarding how to create and nurture sparks in our lives and in the lives of others in our homes, communities, churches, and schools; and how to fan that spark into a flame.  Click HERE to register.
Extension Ministers Gathering
February 27, 2016 - Daytona Beach
Greetings once again in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I hope by now that all of you have received the "Save the Date" letter about our next Extension Ministers day retreat on February 27, 2016.   I promised you more information in my last letter, so here it is.

When discussing our upcoming retreat, we decided on a quality facility located right on Daytona Beach so that all attendees can take full advantage of a beautiful beach location and community.  Please use this opportunity to get away and recharge your batteries.   If you're like me there's always something to keep me busy, but if it gets on my calendar, then I will most likely do it.   So let me encourage you to block off that weekend on your calendar and plan to join us.  Click Here to continue reading.  Click HERE to register.
Camping Sunday
February 28, 2016
Camping Sunday is a chance to celebrate the Florida United Methodist Conference tradition of camp and retreat ministry.  We hope you and your congregation will celebrate the third annual Camping Sunday by setting aside February 28th (or another day that works for your congregation) in your local church to raise scholarship funds and awareness of our Conference's four camp and retreat facilities:  Centenary Camp in Northwest Florida, Riverside Retreat in Southwest Florida and the Life Enrichment Center and Warren W. Willis Camp in Central Florida.  Our camping and retreat ministries serve children, youth and adults on a year-round basis.  Click HERE to watch a video about the difference our camps are making.
Missio Ecclesia
February 17-19, 2016 - Grace UMC, Cape Coral

Discover WHY and HOW the people of God can join Jesus on mission!
Hosted at Grace Church Cape Coral Campus, 13 SE 21st Place, Cape Coral, FL

Joining Jesus in His mission requires a new way of being and doing the church. Leading the church whether as a clergy or layperson is tremendously challenging in our post-Christian culture. At Missio Ecclesia/Church on Mission, we will continue this conversation with two missional pioneers who are not just theorists but practitioners. We will be challenged, stretched, enraged, comforted and equipped to lead our churches into mission for Jesus.

Missio Ecclesia: A "Church on Mission" Conference will be hosted by Grace - Cape Coral and will be led by speakers Alan and Deb Hirsch of the Forge Mission Training Network. This key event in 2016 is for both Clergy and Church Lay Leadership.

In preparation and to help you stir interest among your leaders attached below is a bulletin insert we hope you will use along with personally inviting your key leaders to join you at this conference. Please help us promote this exciting event by also including it in your January newsletter, on your website and other communication media.

The Mary Retreat - A Sabbath Retreat for Women
Life Enrichment Center (LEC)
How are you caring for the busy women in your church?  On your staff?  Leading your ministries?

The Mary Retreat is a great way to give the busy women in your world an opportunity to take a step away from the hustle and bustle and just "be" for a weekend.

Every time we host a Mary Retreat, women share with me that their lives are changed - not by dynamic speakers or powerful worship (because we don't do that at the Mary Retreat) - but by the opportunity to be still and really, truly rest.

Be sure your Sabbath time is sacred in 2016 - register now for April or November retreats!

November 11 - 13, 2016
