The word "theology" has a dry, academic, perhaps even forbidding sound to many people who hear that word.  Theology sounds like some dull, archaic, intellectual endeavor having to do with thinking about God.  It strikes me that that's often the experience to which we in the church reduce theology: something to be dealt with in a PH.D. dissertation, theoretical notions about which seminary professors give lectures and write books, but not something that in any appreciable, significant, meaningful way is related to real life.

The biggest part of why I'm a United Methodist has to do with how our denomination views theology.  In the United Methodist Church theology isn't just an intellectual exercise.  It's not just a way of talking about or even understanding God.  Much more than this, theology is our attempt to live with God.

To grasp Christian theology means to seek to live lives that reflect our relationship with God.  Christian theology isn't simply an exercise in which we reflect upon the ideas of Jesus.  Rather, it builds on that reflection and becomes an intentional effort to put the way of Jesus into practice.  That effort takes the form of a process, an ongoing journey of growth.

There's the journey of an old couple named Abraham and Sarah.  Abraham and Sarah ventured forth, not knowing where they were going - not just in a geographical sense, but also spiritually.  Abraham had been promised that he would be the father of a great nation "even though he was old".  And, by the power of God, Abraham and Sarah were given a child and the family that became the nation of Israel was born.

There was the journey of the exile and much later, the journey back home.  The feelings, questions, and struggles of those journeys are portrayed with powerful and deep language in many of the Psalms.

The New Testament portrays a journey of its own.  Did you know that the meaning of the word disciple is one who learns from and follows someone else?   Discipleship in the New Testament is a following after Jesus.  It is a journeying with Jesus.

The gospel writers even organized their thoughts about Jesus with his travels as an outline.  Jesus is always on a journey...he's always on the road...he doesn't settle into one spot for very long...he's always on the move to somewhere else.  He does what he needs to do, he says what he needs to say, he spends time with the people with whom he needs to spend time, and he moves on to other places and people and events.

Over and over again, the scriptures paint the picture of a God who beckons, who calls forth, a God who evokes, nudges, pushes and encourages people on a journey of faith.

There's a song that was popular years ago called The Journey Is Our Home.  For followers of Jesus that title makes a true statement.  We are those who are at home on the journey, wherever it leads us.

So, how is it with your journey?

A Message from Alice Williams, District Lay Leader
At a recent FLUMC Leadership meeting that included the Bishop, members of the Board of Lay Ministry, and several of the Bishop's cabinet (including the District Superintendents) the role of District Lay Leader and Local Church Lay Leaders was affirmed as stated in Paragraph 660 of the Book of Discipline (BOD).  In the BOD the primary role of the District Lay Leader is to "provide for the training of local church lay leaders for their ministries in the local churches..."  Based on our conversation I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you of three great training opportunities that are available to Laity within the EC District.

First is Lay Servant Ministries:  Lay Servants are to serve the local church or charge in any way in which their witness or leadership and service inspires the laity to deeper commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship.  This includes the interpretation of scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church.  To assist in equipping individuals to grow in their leadership abilities and knowledge of the UMC and scripture, the Lay Servant Ministries folks have put together a wide variety of resources that are available to all Laity to assist them in their leadership "walk towards perfection".  You can find many of these resources on-line at the UMC website, Click HERE.  Additionally, you will find that there are many courses offered through the FLUMC throughout the year.  I highly encourage all Laity to take advantage of these training opportunities.

Second, there is a great opportunity for East Central Laity to take advantage of the "Lead Like Jesus" training through "Leadership Encounter" that will be held November 6 -7 at 1st UMC Oviedo, 263 King St., Oviedo, FL  32765.  This training session consists of 10 hours of action-oriented, participant centered, leadership development that exposes common leadership misconceptions and offers a practical model based on the greatest leader role model of all time, Jesus.  The cost of this session is $79 per person or $150 per couple.  For more information you can call 1-800-363-6890 or Click HERE to register.  Additionally, if you are interested in becoming certified as a regional facilitator, you can extend the training on November 7th.

Third, please mark your calendars now for our annual East Central District Training Event on Saturday February 6, 2016 hosted by our brothers and sisters at Oviedo UMC.  This training event continues to grow in offerings and in attendance as the district provides relevant resources for both Clergy and Laity in our District.  More details will be coming in the next few months but please plan on attending this important training event!

Lastly, in all of this I'm reminded of the story of Gideon.  He was the 7th son in the family, pretty low on the pecking order as things go, and certainly did not demonstrate what you'd call great leadership qualities.  As a matter of fact, he strikes me as being anything but a leader.  This is until an angel of the Lord paid him a visit with a calling from God.  And if you'll remember, Gideon wasn't exactly sure the angel had it right - remember he put "a fleece before the Lord" not once, but twice just to be sure that it really was God calling.  But Gideon did answer the call and leader the Israelites for 20 years!  Who would have thought it?  Certainly not Gideon.  My point is simply this, God sees in each of us that which He can use to help in Kingdom building.  Whatever your calling make sure you are doing what you can to be equipped to answer the call!

Grace and peace,
Lead Like Jesus
November 6-7, 2015 - First UMC, Oviedo
There is a leadership crisis in our world today!  Lead Like Jesus says that leadership happens anytime you influence the thinking, behavior or development of another person.  So if you are a CEO or a mom, a teacher or a Cub Scout leader, a pastor or a nurse, YOU are a leader who can change your world!  Since you lead, you will want to lead in the right way.  Jesus of Nazareth is the greatest leadership role model of all time.

Jim Boesch, first vice president of Florida United Methodist Men and a certified men's ministry specialist, will co-lead with Debbie Piper a two-day "Lead Like Jesus" event Nov. 6-7, 2015, at First UMC 263 King St Oviedo.

Boesch and Piper are master Leadership Encounter trainers.  The event is described as 10 hours of action-oriented learning, followed by weekly online E-lessons.  Encounter is a highly interactive, participant-centered, leadership development workshop that exposes common leadership misconceptions and offers a practical model based on the greatest leader role model of all time, Jesus.

Cost is $79 per person or $150 per couple.  Click HERE for more information and to register.

A Message from Jeff Campbell, District Disaster Coordinator
This month I am not focusing on disasters of any kind.  Instead I would like to give a little thought on being thankful.  The more we realize the true bounty God has given us the more joyful we truly are.

Give thanks that you are given one more day to enjoy God's beautiful world and given another chance to get things right.
Give thanks for parents who raised you and children whom God gave you to raise and teach.
Give thanks for extended family to which you can share life.
Give thanks for shelter from rain and cold and heat.
Give thanks for transportation to get to where we need to conduct our business.
Give thanks for easy access to food and drink.
Give thanks that we live in a society where Christianity is not persecuted as in some locations around the globe.
Give thanks for _____________ (you fill in the blank).

In all you do it is right to give thanks to God.  He is the true source of all you are and have.

FLUMC Recipe Contest:  Get Cooking and Fight Hunger!
September 21, 2015 - November 20, 2015

The Florida Conference kicked off its first recipe contest this September, the month designated as Hunger Action Month by Feeding America.  And, it will run through October, which is World Hunger Action Month, a focus for Stop Hunger Now.  The contest ends November 20, 2015.

Click HERE for contest rules, prize information and how to submit your recipe.  Your recipes will become a part of our Conference recipe box!

Instead of awarding a prize for an individual recipe, the contest winners will be the churches who submit the highest number of recipes.  Those churches with the most participation will receive funding for a hunger prevention ministry of their choice.  Your church could win $1,000, $750 or $500!

So mobilize your cooks, chefs, grillers and BBQ teams, and send us your recipes!
