LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Spring has sprung...I think so, but where is the warm weather?  Coming I am sure, but we are still gearing up for the busy high season!

Our 2016 calendar is looking full and the Chamber has already started with some new initiatives. Our membership committee recommended to our Board of Directors to alternate our general membership meetings from morning to evening. Since January we hosted 2 very successful night meetings and our May and July will also be in the evening.  Both will be more geared to general networking and socializing with our members and guests.  Also a brand new shopping incentive was created to give more benefit to our retail partners.  April 2nd was the inaugural debut of 'Port Jefferson on Sale',  a shopping crawl to encourage more foot traffic into stores.  Many thanks to our participating retailers and sponsors: Starbuck, Schafer's and Tommy's Place.  We are listening to our member's needs and wants!

Looking for continued improvement of our events, this year's Health & Wellness was evaluated and changes to 'Fest' instead of 'Expo', creating an event that is more engaging with more activities for the attendees.

In addition spring brings our Green Fest, the opening of the outdoor farmer's market and roller skating on the harbor down at the Harborfront Park.

The Village awakens with visitors, with merchants sprucing up there storefronts preparing for the influx of shoppers and taking pride in their community.  Please continue to support your Chamber...we are here to support YOU!

Congratulations to Island Christian Church of Port Jefferson on their 5th anniversary, celebrated April 17th.  A special service was held in conjunction with lunch and festivities!
Congratulations to Chamber Partner Jefferson's Ferry of South Setauket. Once again was voted 'Best Assisted Living and Best Retirement Community.'  Well-deserved and many thanks to all who voted!

In February our 2016 Board of Directors and Executive Board were sworn in at our general membership meeting sponsored by our Chamber Partner Danfords.  Congratulations to all!

In 'Recognizing Our Independent Business Women' chamber partner Sherry Sobel, owner of A Cake In Time received the honor of being nominated by our Chamber through Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone's office in celebration of Women's History. The awards were held March 23rd at the Women's Hall of Fame in the Plaza of the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge.  The proclamation honored Sherry as a women business owner who strives toward the highest levels, devotes time and energy to her community in a meaningful way, and forges paths of leadership for other women to follow.  Congratulation Sherry!

Spreading the good word and representing your Chamber, Suzanne Velazquez, your President and Barbara Ransome have been attending meeting and events including the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers, meeting with Congressman Lee Zeldin in a business forum, and presenting at special events.  The Chamber is doing their share of outreach for their members!

Welcome NEW Store Front Businesses In the Village- Locals Café, Slurp, Smoke Shack Blues, Fame & Rebel, It Takes A Village Wellness, The General Store and Port Jeff Salt Cave.  THANK YOU for joining our business community!

EASTER PARADE & HUNT

The crowds were as large as ever for this year's 18th Annual Easter Parade & Hunt.  The weather held up dry, sunny and a bit cool.  Thanks again to Innovation Toyota who sponsored our event.  Their support assists with the purchasing of all the chocolate candy and the 3,000 eggs that are distributed to the children that day.  Additional thanks to the Greater Port Jefferson Northern Brookhaven Arts Council who loaned the Chamber their PA systems as well as stanches to create an aisle for the children to see the bunnies.

Again Easter Bunny Barbara Ransome and Co-Bunny Joanne Cornell delighted children with hundreds of photo opportunities.  Chamber volunteers did a great job with crowd control and assisting the bunnies with the candy.  A special thanks to our 2 junior volunteers Ella and Paige who carried our banner and really helped handing out the candy to the children!

7th ANNUAL HEALTH & WELLNESS FEST

This year things were changed up a bit for this annual event. Wanting to create a more 'festive' atmosphere for Health & Wellness the name changed from Expo to Fest promoting more engaging activities!  In addition the tag line went to 'eat well, live well' emphasizing healthy and nutritional eating.   St. Charles Hospital sponsored a food court that featured free healthy meals to all the attendees, including fruit smoothies, shaker salads, and healthy quesadillas made from black beans and quinoa!   Their Chef and staff gave away over 800 servings of food!!

New exhibitors and initiatives included Pet Partners with their certified therapy miniature horse name Caley, a demonstration area presenting programs on heirloom seeds, fitness instruction and learning about essential oils and for fun a performance of ballroom dancing.

The attendance was terrific with an estimate of 400-450 visitors.  The 2k fun run brought in their runners and there was a steady flow of attendees throughout the day.

Special thanks to our 3 major hospitals for their steadfast commitment and sponsorship, St. Charles, Mather, and Stony Brook Medicine.  In addition the custodial help and the Port Jefferson School district could not have been more helpful and supportive as our partner.
