Help your patients choose wisely

Choosing Wisely, an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation, focuses on conversations between providers and patients informed by evidence-based recommendations from specialty medical society partners. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Resource Stewardship Initiative (RSI) also promotes the use of evidence-based medicine when making health care stewardship decisions. The RSI encourages conversations between physicians and patients about appropriate and necessary care.

As part of the RSI, The Physician Alliance is focusing on metrics related to:
  1. Decreasing the use of imaging for low back pain (HEDIS METRIC) - Click for more information.
  2. Decreasing the use of pap smears in women under 21 years of age (HEDIS METRIC) -  Click for more information.
  3. Decreasing antibiotic use for adults with acute bronchitis (HEDIS METRIC) - Click here for more information.
The Physician Alliance also offers a variety of information posters that can help stimulate conversations with patients. Many of these posters are related to TPA's focus areas for the Resource Stewardship Initiative.

**Updated performance reports will be sent by the end of the year to physicians based on the RSI focus areas.
New tip sheet helps improve blood pressure measure

Approximately one in three U.S. adults, or approximately 70 million people, have high blood pressure, but only about half (52%) of these people have it under control, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Physician Alliance created a tip sheet to help improve the measure relating to adequate control of blood pressure in hypertension. The tip sheet also includes proper coding to ensure the highest quality score.

There are numerous tip sheets available on TPA's website to help improve quality measures, coding and more. Visit the Learning Center to see what's available to practices.
Free webinar focuses on billing for chronic care management

On January 1, 2015, Medicare began paying separately for non-face-to-face care coordination services furnished to Medicare beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions.

The Michigan Center for Effective IT Adoption is hosting a free webinar on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 12-1pm focused on billing for chronic care management.

The webinar will clarify how to provide this billable service to patients, which patients are permitted to participate and what physicians need to do to ensure they are eligible to bill for this service. They will also review EHR and other technical requirements that must be met to take advantage of this program. Register today for this educational opportunity.
Share your advice, promote your practice

Submitting a short article for a blog is a great way to promote your practice by offering helpful tips to the public (or your article can be physician-focused).
The blog will be posted on TPA's blog and the Patch online community site. If you would like to submit a 300-500 word blog post that provides patient tips or is physician-focused, please email Kathryn Bartz.

Check out our blog archives for samples of what's been written in the past.
