From the President -- Thom Fladung

How tough is a freelance writing gig these days?

Well, type "how hard is freelance writing" into the Google machine and step back for a long string of laments -with the first one headlined "Why it's so F*ing Hard to Be a Freelance Writer."

If you've ever tried it, you know it's hard. It's also not impossible. And The Press Club of Cleveland has assembled a panel that can help you learn just how possible it is.

Vince Guerrieri, Afi-Odelia Scruggs and Jill Sell will talk about how they've built freelance careers, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26 at Market Garden Brewery on West 25th in Ohio City. The discussion will be moderated by Press Club board member - and successful freelance journalist - Jenifer Keirn. Just click here to sign up.

We know our panelists know how to produce award-winning freelance journalism because they just did it.

Guerrieri, Sell and Scruggs finished first, second and third, respectively, in the Best Freelance Writer in Ohio category for our 2017 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards.

This all also allows us to make up for a snafu - or at least attempt to. Because of some confusion with the service we use to help organize the judging of our awards, the freelancers were left out of the awards show held at the House of Blues in June.

Oy. As if freelancing already weren't tough enough, right?

We were mortified. The whole idea of the awards is to celebrate the excellent journalism going on all around us and we missed an entire category.

We can't go back and make up for that. But we do plan to celebrate our freelance award-winners on July 26th. And now we get to listen and learn from them as well.

Please join us.
