Water, Water - And Now the Sun
Full Creek

This photo shows the creek behind Roger's and my house on the morning of December 22nd.  It was exciting and scary at the same time.  Huge boulders were bouncing around under the water and it sounded like thunder even though the storm had passed.  The creek is now a different shape than before the storm.  I was reminded of the water's power and the damage which can take place in these storms.

As a result of the December rains, a number of people we know have had problems at their homes because of the resulting water showing up in places unexpected.  One neighbor had water come in through the lower walls because a gutter down spout was clogged.  Another had water flood their home because there were broken water lines next door and with the added rain the drainage away from their home was not adequate.  As a Realtor I see many examples of water damage, and am reminded of how many of these problems could be avoided with proper maintenance.

Water issues come in many forms.  First, many properties do not have gutters, or if they do the gutter systems are not complete or maintained on a regular basis, or they do not properly drain AWAY from the house. Another is that patios and/or landscaping around the house are not properly graded to direct the flow of water away from the house.  Another frequent concern is planting next to the house that is over watered and thus creats moisture problems in the walls.  In addition, irrigation sprinklers are often positioned so that the spray hits the house and/or windows creating damage to woodwork, stucco and windows.

Creating ways for any water to drain away from the house or keeping it away from the house all together is very important.  Your home is a very special investment. If you were going to sell your home in the near future you would start thinking of things to make it attractive to buyers.  If you are not planning to sell your home in the near future, pretend you are. Start to do the things necessary so that it looks as though it were ready for sale.

Charlotte and I would be willing to walk through and around your home to help you see the things that might need work.  It sometimes helps to have a fresh set of eyes take a look at the property. Also, the company that supplied my rain gutters, Quality Seamless Rain Gutters, will provide you with a $20.00 discount gutter work or service if you reference this newsletter.  The name again is Quality Seamless Rain Gutters and you can reach them at 951-734-4729.  Check out the coupon below for more information.
