It's December, and while folks most everywhere in the country are slogging through cold rain or snow, Borrego Springs is enjoying sunshine and clear skies. There is good availability in the RV Park for most of the month, so consider getting out of the rain or snow for a winter respite.
This month features another of our series of star parties with Astronomer Dennis Mammana, another photography workshop with Master Photographer Sharon Lobel, and the ever-popular Nesya and her water aerobics, yoga and pilates classes.
The golf course has been overseeded and is getting good reviews, so call

Fifth Annual Borrego Springs Film Festival Returns January 11-15
|
"Shadow of Drought: Southern California's Looming Water Crisis" Will be screened Saturday, January 13 at 3:30 PM, Block "I"
|
The fifth annual Borrego Springs Film Festival will run January 11 through 15 at the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center. 55 films were selected for screening over the five-day fest out of 230 films submitted.
Full-festival passes will go on sale at the festival
website on or around December 15 for $125 each. Individual screening block tickets will be available for $10 each. Individual tickets guarantee admission, while admission for full-fest pass holders is first-come first-served.
Festival founder Fred Jee promises another great lineup of films, noting that the quality of the films presented has increased steadily over the years. "This year there were no less than 70 films that were rated 8.4 (out of 10) or higher. This is a substantial improvement in the quality of the films".
The lineup of films is broadly diverse, and represent a spectrum of genres, from animation, documentaries, latino, narrative shorts and features. It is a strongly international festival as well, with films from no less than 13 nations around the world
As in the past, full-festival passes are expected to sell out rather quickly after going on sale. As Fred says, "If you wait, it will be too late!" But a pass is not needed to see many great films. You can go online and buy individual screening block tickets for $10 and be guaranteed seats in the block, or you can show up at the box office at around 10 minutes before the scheduled block time, and purchase tickets at the door for most if not all films.

The documentary "Aghanashini" about a wild and scenic river in India will kick off the
2018 Film Festival.
|
The festival begins at 4 PM on January 11, with a block of four films headlines by the 41-minute documentary "Aghanashini". This highly rated film uses stunning cinematography and high production values to reveal an unspoiled and remote river in India.

Au Revoir Balthazar (10 Minute Animation)
|
Friday at 2 PM brings one of our screening committee's favorite films of the year. Animated using highly innovative materials and artistic methods, "Au Revoir Balthazar" is one of the most touching short animations in recent memory. Some screeners were actually moved to tears while watching it. (Guilty!)
|
"First Girl I Loved", 91 Minute Narrative Feature Block H, Saturday at 1 PM
Saturday at 1 PM Brings what may prove to be the closest thing to a big-studio big -budget narrative feature film in BSFF. "First Girl I Loved" is a beautifully crafted coming-of-age story of young love. Again, some screeners were moved to tears while viewing it. No doubt some festival-goers will be also.
|
|
"SOS: The Salton Sea Walk", will be shown Sunday at 1 PM. |
|
Sunday, January 14 features the screening of a documentary on the subject of one of the most important and vexing environmental problems of our desert area. In 2015, community activist Randy Brown walked the entire shoreline of the Salton Sea in the heat of summer. His mission: to raise awareness of the continued degradation and depletion of the sea and our governments' near-complete ignorance and lack of action.

"Cataract Gold" is a old-fashioned western shot partially in Borrego Springs.
|
On Monday, January 15, the festival will wrap up with the presentation of "Cataract Gold" a feature-length western produced and shot partially in Borrego Springs. Watch carefully, you may see some folks you know in this film!
