Happy Birthday First Church!

Connect, grow, and serve with us. For the good of the city.

Danny Downs received his 50-Year Member certificate at the 11:00 service.

Last Sunday, we recognized our 50+ Year Members on Heritage Sunday. Joining the ranks of 50-year membership were Danny Downs and Steve Ossiander.  We are grateful for their lifetime of dedication to serving Christ through our congregation.

Celebrating Baptism

Every baptism is special, but it is a rare occasion to baptize infant cousins on the same day! What a joy it was on Sunday, March 12th to welcome Layla Orlena El Jazouli, daughter of Omar and Christina El Jazouli, and Rosalie Katherine Bure, daughter of Scott and Elizabeth Bure, into the family of Christ. You may recognize their mothers, who are sisters that grew up in this congregation. You may also know their grandparents, Donald Pekrul and Danny and Becky Downs, who are long-time members active in many areas of the church. We look forward to nurturing these children as a faith community, just as we did their mothers.

We were blessed to celebrate another exciting baptism last Sunday, March 19th. Our associate pastor, Shawn O'Trimble, and his wife, Teri, presented their twins, Luke Robert and Leia Grace O'Trimble, for baptism. Topeka District Superintendent Kay Scarbrough officiated the baptism with assistance from our Lead Pastor, Jeff Clinger. It is our joy to surround the O'Trimble twins with love and support as they begin their lives in the church.

Searching for a Director of Children's Discipleship

We need your help to find our new Director of Children's Discipleship. Are you connected with an organization, like a parenting club or a PTO, where there might be someone who is looking for a job working with children? Maybe you know someone with a teaching degree who is looking for something outside of the classroom, or a stay-at-home mom or dad who is looking to go back to work. We invite you to send this link to our job posting to anyone who might be interested, share it on social media, and post it on community message boards for preschools, playgroups, and other organizations where you are a member. We trust that God will provide us with the right person, but we need your help to get the word out!

Church T-shirts One Week Left to Order Your New Church Shirt

You may now order a shirt with our new church logo! Reliant Apparel, a downtown Topeka business, has designed T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and jackets for our members to wear when we are out in the community. You may visit our Web Store at ReliantApparel.com to view the products and place your order, or visit the T-Shirt table in the Celebration Room on March 12, 19, & 26th. You must place your online order by March 31st. After that day, our web store will be taken down. All orders (web and in person) will be delivered to the church, and will be available for pick up on April 9th.

Name Tags are Coming, Too!

Many of our members have inquired about ordering new name tags with our logo, so they can wear them to "advertise" our church when they go to events out in the community and on Sunday mornings. Stay tuned for more information!

Phase 2 Activities

Your Phase 2 Team has been hard at work to develop some activities we hope you'll look forward to-- please let Tiwana know if you're interested  or sign up on the Phase 2 board in the Celebration Room.
  • Sunday, March 26
    • 3-5 p.m. We've reserved the back room at Potwin Pottery to paint spring themed items. Potwin Pottery has just moved--we will now meet at their new location in Fairlawn Plaza Mall (21st & Fairlawn). The details for the Potwin Pottery event are:
      • If we have more than eight people, the studio fee will be $6 per person.
      • You'll choose your item to paint. The cost for these range from $5-$75. We have photos of some of the pieces for you to see. Please let us know if you're interested so you can choose your item in advance.
      • Once the pieces are painted, PP will fire them and have them available for pick-up in a week
  • Saturday, April 1

Community Fun at Bridge2Bridge

Last year our members enjoyed running and walking in downtown Topeka's Bridge 2 Bridge 5K. We encourage you to join in the fun and participate in this event with your fellow church members. Our new church T-shirts will be ready in time for the race, which is the morning of April 22nd, so we can represent our community spirit as a church family! As you make plans to participate, send a quick note to Marsha Oliver so we can coordinate a meeting spot to take a "team" photo and run/walk as a group (if you like). Register for the race, circle April 22nd on your calendar, and look forward to a fun morning downtown with your church family!

Charitable Donations From An IRA Account

At the end of 2015, federal legislation was passed making the IRA direct charitable rollover gift option permanent. The law allows "senior" charitably-minded individuals a golden opportunity to make gifts directly from an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) and exclude the amount of that gift from gross income. (You must be over age 70-1/2 or older to use this gift option.)

If you like the idea of saving taxes and supporting your church, an IRA charitable rollover gift makes sense for you. Please contact your IRA administrator to learn more and get started with your gift.

Ministry Get to Know Your Stephen Ministers

Life lessons prepared me to be a Stephen Minister. Being a Stephen Minister is another way I can express my faith to help others in our church and community. Since I began this lay ministry, I have grown in my ability to listen with empathy.

New Children's Sunday School Check-in!

We have a new check-in procedure for Children's Sunday School. Check-in is now in the Celebration Room. Melissa Evans will be stationed at the wooden kiosk at the northeast corner of the Celebration Room, and kiddos will be checked in via computer. A nametag will be printed for each child, and the parent will receive a corresponding label. This parental label will contain unique identifying numbers for each of the children they will be picking up, and must be presented in each room to pick up your children.

We've moved the check-in to the main floor since we have children attending Sunday School on both floors of the Mulvane Building. We are grateful to the Children's Renovation Team for this more secure and streamlined process that interfaces directly with ACS.

Scholarships for Summer Camps

Sometimes the early bird really DOES get the worm! The United Methodist Women want to encourage our children and youth at the church to participate in one of the summer camps at Chippewa or the Institute at Baker University. The camps themselves offer an early bird discount of $20 and the women will offer scholarships for anyone who fills out our camp form. The early bird registration deadline is May 1st. The scholarship is for youth or children who fills out the form by April 23. You can learn more about the camps by clicking here.

SO, you'll want to look at your busy summer calendars and decide soon if one of the many fun weeks offered is something you want to do. Camp information and the scholarship form are available at the front desk and upstairs at the children's table. We will take all of the forms turned in by April 23rd and divide up the funds available.

Turn in your scholarship forms to the front desk by April 23rd.
