Fall Church Office Hours

The church office is now open Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Prayer Covenant Churches

The Topeka District of the Great Plains Conference has arranged a covenant calendar to ensure all churches in our connection are held in prayer by the others. We will pray for a different church each week. Check this newsletter for our next prayer covenant church, and join us in prayer for them as another church joins in prayer for us.

Requesting Communications for Your Church Announcement: Update

As we approach the fall, it is a good time to be reminded of how to communicate your announcement about church activities or church news with the staff. All announcements for church publications go through Jayna McFarland, Publications Coordinator. When Jayna receives an announcement, she prepares the information for publishing in the newsletter and bulletin, and forwards the information to Tina Boles, Administrator, to schedule the necessary facilities and add the information to the church calendar. Tina can also create an online registration for your event.

To submit an announcement, please visit the Communications page on our website and complete the Church Activities Communications Request Form. You may also pick up a printed version of the form from the front desk at the church office. The deadline to submit a church announcement for the weekly newsletter is Tuesday at 12 p.m. If you would like to add a picture or document to your announcement, you may send it via email to Jayna McFarland after submitting the form.

Some things to remember as you craft your church announcement:
  • Bear in mind that many who read our announcements are new to our church, or may be visitors looking to connect with us. Try not to assume that everyone knows the context of your announcement (for instance, whether this is an annual church event, who this event or activity is for, or if this announcement is in reference to something that happened previously)
  • Our weekly emailed newsletter often contains more information about church business than our printed Sunday bulletin. This is because the newsletter is composed primarily for those who are already members of, or deeply connected to, our church. The bulletin is primarily composed for visitors and those new to the church. The bulletin emphasizes opportunities to sign up for church activities and information about our church in general. The bulletin is a tool to help those new to our church get connected.
  • Refer to our church as Topeka First United Methodist. You may also use the shorter title, Topeka First UMC. We no longer use FUMC as our title.
  • Jayna will generally edit your article according to the Associated Press style guide used by the Great Plains Annual Conference (with some exceptions). It is helpful if you keep these guidelines in mind as you write your article, but not required. Click here to read the guidelines.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jayna McFarland in the church office, 785-233-8100, or by email. Jayna's office hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Worship Enhancements Update

Earlier this year, our members rallied together to raise money for enhancing our worship experience through renovations to our bells and organ and updates to our worship technology. The careful implementation of our our improvement plans began right away.

The Worship Enhancements continue to move forward. The handbells and chimes maintenance and repairs have been completed and have been returned. They look great and are expected to sound even better when our handbell choirs play at the worship services. The organ repairs are progressing and continue to be implemented in phases to allow the organ to remain usable for services until after Christmas. The major organ upgrades are still scheduled to occur between Christmas, 2017 and Easter, 2018. We expect a consultant's report this week, which incorporates input for all the groups involved in Topeka First UMC worship services and will provide detailed recommendations concerning technology upgrades to accomplish the needs and desires of our worship leaders. Upon receipt of this report will be reviewed closely by the technology sub-committee to determine how to proceed to meet the needs within the budget. The committee has proceeded with the purchase of a new laptop and software to support the visual presentations created by our volunteers providing these at all our services. While everything may seem to be moving slowly, everything is progressing on schedule. More physical changes will be noticeable as the details of the technology upgrades are finalized. All these upgrades would not be possible without the support of the Topeka First UMC congregation. The Board of Trustees thanks everyone for their support of these Worship Enhancements.

Adult Spiritual Growth Classes begin the Fall Session this Sunday!

The heart of faith rests in our personal relationship with God. We develop that relationship over time through study, prayer, and sharing faith stories with one another. Spiritual growth is for all ages and gives us the opportunity to discover who we are becoming as people of faith. Join others and invest in your relationship with God by joining a small group on Sunday morning.  Our adult classes are kicking off their Fall studies this Sunday and welcome you to join. The link below will share more about our adult classes that meet at 9:30 and their location.

Are you interested in an 11 a.m. Sunday class?
Come to a short meeting on September 10th at 10:30 a.m. in the Hearth Room for any 9:30 worshipers who are interested in beginning an adult small group during the 11 a.m.-12 p.m. time frame.

Grow Twentysomething

Don't forget--our new Sunday morning class Twentysomething begins September 10th at 9:30 a.m. in Rm 104.  In the tumultuous time of your twenties, life can become overwhelming, confusing, and very exciting. This new class can serve a peaceful refuge to discuss how life is going and offer wisdom from the Bible, fellow Topeka First UMC members, and more. This fall, we will begin with lessons based on the book "Twentysomething: Surviving and Thriving in the Real World." No matter if you're a recent high school graduate just starting on your adult journey, the loved one of a twentysomething you'd like to understand better, or anywhere in-between, we would be happy to welcome you! Contact Hannah Naeger for more information.

Everyone is invited to a time of education and conversation beginning at 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Grow Book Study: Life in a Jar

"Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project," is the inspiring true story of Irena Sendler; her story, her bravery, and her connection to Kansas. This summer Alice Bertels followed Irena Sendler's footsteps through Warsaw, Poland, including stops at well-known sites as well little-known personal connections.

Alice will facilitate a four-week book study of "Life in a Jar," on Mondays September 18th and 25th and October 1st and 8th, 10-11 a.m. in Room 106. Alice will be able to add extra flavor to this study by sharing her adventures in Poland and adding personal thoughts on Irena's life. You do not have to have the book read, just bring it with you to the first study.

If you do not have a book, we can order one for you for $20. These will be ordered from the Unsung Hero website, where the proceeds will go to a non-profit that helps survivors of the Holocaust.
Please indicate the need for a book when you register on our Church Connection Portal.

Encore Presentation:
Following the Steps of Irena Sendler:  A Trip through Warsaw, Poland

Alice Bertels will share an encore presentation of her trip through Warsaw, Poland for her Adult Sunday School Class at  9:30 a.m. on September 17 in Fellowship Hall. There is an open invitation extended to others who would like to attend. This would be a fantastic opportunity for those who are signing up for the "Life in a Jar" book study to learn more about the inspiring true story of Irena Sendler; her story, her bravery, and her connection to Kansas. Follow Irena's footsteps through Warsaw, Poland, including stops at well-known sites as well little-known personal connections to Irena. A description of other sites related to this story will include the Warsaw Zoo (setting of The Zoo Keepers Wife) and two concentration camps used by the Nazis to rid Europe of Jews and others they deemed undesirable. A look at present day Poland will remind us that even when the world is at its darkest there are those who shine, doing whatever they can to "Repair the World."

First Aid/CPR Class

Have you ever wanted to be trained in first aid and CPR? Have you had the training, but had your certification lapse? Allison Brewer, Director of Children's Discipleship, will arrange an instructor to provide a class for church members and staff if there is enough interest. Email her to sign up.

Explore the Characters of Advent in a Pre-Advent/Advent Study

Join Scott Brewer in taking a look at the characters of Advent in their historic and biblical context. This would be a fun opportunity to dig in to the Christmas story while the children of the church prepare the Christmas Pageant. (Expect some attempts at humor.) There is no cost for this class, but please sign up on our Church Connection Portal.

Adult Classes Parenting the Love & Logic Way This Fall

Love and Logic is a commonsense approach that teaches parents skills to cultivate confidence and good decision-making in children by offering choices, empathy, and respect while adults avoid anger, threats, warnings, or lectures. Love and Logic is easy to learn and can be put to use right away; it changes lives and raises responsible children. Come and learn how to take some of the power struggle out of parenting using the Love and Logic Way.

Erin Corbin, a school counselor, will facilitate the eight Wednesday evening sessions: October 4,11,18, November 1,8,15, 29 and December 6. Childcare for Kindergarten and younger is available upon request. Registration is due by September 27th or until class limit of 12 is reached. The cost of the workbook is a gift from the church. You may register on our Church Connection Portal.

Grow Boundaries Book Study

A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual boundaries are all important and impact all areas of our lives; setting clear boundaries is essential to a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Serve
Serve Hurricane Harvey: How You Can Help

The Great Plains Conference (the organizational body of all United Methodist Churches in Kansas and Nebraska)  has set a goal of making and collecting 5,000 cleaning kits (flood buckets) for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Churches in the  Topeka District are thus asked to contribute  300 cleaning kits by September 13. Pastor Jeff is hoping we will lead our community in the collection of cleaning kits for flood relief. Would you consider providing a cleaning kit?

Instructions for cleaning kits can be found on the UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) website. Please take a look at the packing list watch the instructional video to learn how to assemble a cleaning kit. Most of the items can be found in a discount retailer or dollar store.

Please bring your assembled cleaning kit to church no later than September 10th. We will take the cleaning kits to the Great Plains Conference office, which will then deliver the kits to the areas affected by the hurricane on September 16th.

Operation Backpack Operation Backpack Service Opportunity

Our church will once again serve State Street school by delivering weekend sacks of food to needy children to be put in their backpacks for the weekend. We will once again need two people to help hand out the filled sacks to the students. Our members have found this to be a rewarding experience of becoming familiar with the students and seeing their happy faces as they receive their snacks.  You can serve once a month or more, usually on Fridays. Please e-mail Jody Teeter  to express interest or telephone her at 785-286-1189 and leave a message. We also need volunteers to fill the sacks with snacks. First filling the sacks session is September 7 at Indian Creek School (NE 43rd & Indian Creek Rd.) and first delivery will be on September 8. (Sack-filling sessions were previously held at Mathes Learning Center, but will now be held at Indian Creek School.)

Fundraising for Topeka North Outreach

Topeka North Outreach (TNO) is one of the help organizations that our church supports. The Board has representatives from 20 churches all serving the area North of the river. Our representatives are Laura Smith and Karen Sexton. The organization is staffed by volunteers and we receive no government assistance. The budget is fully funded by donations from member churches and other organizations in the community. The main fundraising for the last several years has been the Fall Festival. The best money raiser of the festival was the making and selling of our famous Bierocks.

So, the Board of TNO has asked if we will one again contribute by making the bierocks at our church. The member churches will sell and distribute the bierocks in their own churches and will assist us with expenses and help. The Fall Festival will not be held and all of their efforts will be in the bierock project.

We will start taking orders this Sunday, September 10th, so look for the sign-up sheet in the Celebration Room. We will start production on Thursday, September 14th.  Meat and roll makers will start at 8 a.m. and rolling and assembling will start at 9 a.m. It is work, but it is also pleasure as we work together. Former bierock ladies are eager to start and we invite anyone new to join us. We will be finished before noon. Bring a rolling pin, if you have a favorite!

Connect Join Our Team for the Rescue Run

Hey Runners/Walkers! For the third year, we are planning to have a church team in the Miracle on Kansas Avenue Rescue Run 5K, held this year on Saturday, November 25, 2017. This is a timed run, which makes a couple laps around the downtown area and right by our church just before the Miracle on Kansas Avenue Parade. The Run is a fundraiser for the Topeka Rescue Mission. Although it is timed, it is mostly a fun run and some people are just walking the route. If you have never done a 5K, this is a perfect race for you and if you start training now, you can do it! Don't worry if you aren't the fastest--every team member helps!

If you would like to join the church team, click here to visit their website , click on the "Register Here" button, then click on "Register Teammate," then look for "Topeka First United Methodist" on the drop down menu, and use our Team Password "Wesley1". The early-bird entry fee is $20. If you have any questions, e-mail Randall Hodgkinson.

"Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2.
September Missions Collection serve

Join us in collecting soap and body wash for Let's Help throughout the month of September. You may bring your donations to the Celebration Room.

serve Opportunities to Serve at State Street Elementary: WAFFLE and Beyond!

There are two opportunities for you to help us, as a church, fulfill our commitment to serve the children and families of State Street Elementary School. First, we are getting close to the start of our WAFFLE program for the 2017/2018 school year and  at least 2 more volunteers are needed to complete our team . More volunteers would be VERY welcome. We really don't want to turn any families away from this program. Just  one hour  of your time on Late Start Fridays is needed. We start Friday, September 8th.  Check out the video in this link to find out just what we do at WAFFLE. Please contact Jaena Greenwood at 785-220-8796 to learn more or get involved.

The second opportunity is becoming a Lunch Buddy. Chris Stewart from The Bridge shared information at all three services last week. If you are wanting to get involved at State Street, this is also a great opportunity. This program asks for just  30 minutes of your time one day a week  to meet with, and have lunch with, a child at State Street. Take a look at the video in this link for more information. You can also contact Christ Stewart at 785-215-7735.

Sing With the Choir

Anyone who loves to sing is invited to join our Sanctuary Choir, directed by Steve Eubank. All voices and skill levels are welcome! The Sanctuary Choir prepares sacred music from many genres for the 11 a.m. service each week, with opportunities for special performances and services arising throughout the year. The choir meets at 7:30 on Thursday nights in Rm L18 (or in the Sanctuary) and at 10:30 on Sunday mornings before worship.  Contact Steve Eubank for more information.

Ring Out the Bells!

Great News! The bells have retuned from being refurbished and they are shiny and ready to ring this fall. Have you, your child, or your youth ever thought that it might be fun to try ringing those shiny bells on a Sunday morning? If so--or if you would like to know more about it--please contact Sharon Fick at 785-845-0366 or  send her an email.

Openings are available now for new ringers. Previous instrumental experience is always helpful, but not required. I would like to start a children's choir again for those in 3rd grade and above. Children's rehearsals would be on Wednesday evenings, but the time is still being determined. We need at least six children to have a successful choir. They must be capable of standing and paying attention for one hour in order to participate. The fall commitment for children is September though the children's pageant in December. Youth 6th grade through high school rehearse at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings. There is a beginning adult bell choir on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. and an advanced bell choir on Thursday evenings at 6-7:30 p.m. For more information contact Sharon Fick.

Financial Update

We are a little over halfway through the year and thought we should give everyone an update on our receipts. We had budgeted to receive $444,872 through the end of July, and as of July 31 we have received $398,592. This is $46,280 less than expected.

Children
New for Families and Children

Watch for Children's bulletins in church that tie into the Bible story we have during Sunday School.  Additionally, parents can pick up a devotional at the check-in desk that will give their whole family ways to dig deeper into the Bible story that we studied that week.

Worship Readiness for Children

Worship Readiness is a new class that we offer during 11 a.m. worship. This class is designed for children ages 3-8 whose parents choose for them an alternative to staying through the entire worship service. Children of all ages are always welcome in worship. This class will use hands-on activities and child-friendly discussion to help children learn about the elements of worship and spiritual practices. We invite children to start worship with their parents to experience the prayer, hymns, and scripture as a family. Then they will be dismissed to the back of the Sanctuary. The Worship Readiness leaders will guide the children to their class. You can pick up your children in the Room 104 after worship. Please contact Allison Brewer with any questions or if you are interested in volunteering with this class.
