Welcoming Our New Members

We are always overjoyed to welcome new members into our church family! Last Sunday at the 8:15 service, Scott and Annette Myers and Chuck Wilson officially joined our church. Take a moment to get to know them and make them feel at home in their new faith community.

Searching for a Director of Children's Discipleship

We need your help to find our new Director of Children's Discipleship. Are you connected with an organization, like a parenting club or a PTO, where there might be someone who is looking for a job working with children? Maybe you know someone with a teaching degree who is looking for something outside of the classroom, or a stay-at-home mom or dad who is looking to go back to work. We invite you to send this link to our job posting to anyone who might be interested, share it on social media, and post it on community message boards for preschools, playgroups, and other organizations where you are a member. We trust that God will provide us with the right person, but we need your help to get the word out!

Downtown Connection Week

This is the middle of Downtown Connection Week! The Downtown Engagement Team  invites you to patronize a downtown area shop or restaurant to show our church's support for our community. Use the card you received in your bulletin last week to let  the proprietors of the business know we appreciate all they do for our neighborhood. (Extra cards are available at the church office.) The card has room for a brief message of thanks, encouragement, or appreciation. For instance, when you tip your waiter you can also write a note to the manager thanking them for the great dining experience. If you enjoyed shopping at a boutique, you can leave a note for the small business owner with the cashier. And of course, wear your First Church apparel when you go downtown!

You might want to make arrangements to accomplish this with your First Church friends. We encourage you to take a photo and send it to Jayna McFarland, Publications Coordinator. You may also upload your photo to our Google Photo album. If you post to your social media page, be sure to use our hashtag: #forthegoodofthecity

Where should you go?

Church T-shirts Two Weeks Left to Order Your New Church Shirt

You may now order a shirt with our new church logo! Reliant Apparel, a downtown Topeka business, has designed T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and jackets for our members to wear when we are out in the community. You may visit our Web Store at ReliantApparel.com to view the products and place your order, or visit the T-Shirt table in the Celebration Room on March 12, 19, & 26th. You must place your online order by March 31st. After that day, our web store will be taken down. All orders (web and in person) will be delivered to the church, and will be available for pick up on April 9th.

Name Tags are Coming, Too!

Many of our members have inquired about ordering new name tags with our logo, so they can wear them to "advertise" our church when they go to events out in the community and on Sunday mornings. Stay tuned for more information!

worship Order Your Easter Lilies

If you would like to dedicate an Easter lily in honor or in memory of a loved one, fill out the form you will find in your bulletin this Sunday. Lilies are $10 each, and will be placed in the Chapel and Sanctuary on Easter, with the dedications listed in the bulletin insert. After this Sunday, you may pick up a form from the front desk. Order forms must be turned in by Sunday, April 2nd.

Save the Date for Bridge2Bridge

Last year our members enjoyed running and walking in downtown Topeka's Bridge 2 Bridge 5k. We encourage you to join in the fun and participate in this event with your fellow church members. Our new church T-shirts will be ready in time for the race, which is the morning of April 22nd, so we can represent our community spirit as a church family! As you make plans to participate, send a quick note to Marsha Oliver so we can coordinate a meeting spot to take a "team" photo and run/walk as a group (if you like). Register for the race, circle April 22nd on your calendar, and look forward to a fun morning downtown with your church family!

Stephen Ministry has purchased this helpful new book and put it in our church library. It is written in a warm, conversational style that covers the wide range of issues a cancer diagnosis brings. Check it out!

Ministry Get to Know Your Stephen Ministers

Introducing two of your Stephen Ministers, Dale Fooshee and Andrea Clifton, who have given one-on-one Christian care to members of our congregation.

Dale Fooshee

My work for the Annual Conference involved listening to folks in distress, especially farm families about to lose their farms and bankers whose bank had just been closed by the FDIC. Even with that background, being a Stephen Minister has sharpened my listening skills and my commitment to confidentiality.

Andrea Clifton

I believe God placed the desire in my heart to be a Stephen Minister, then the ministry leaders prepared me with their instruction and wisdom. Being a Stephen Minister is one way I can serve God's people, something all Christians are called to do. Stephen Ministry has helped me grow in my Christian faith and in my ability to listen and be patient for God's timing.

March Mission Focus

The Missions Team food collection focus for the month of March is grocery bags of needed items for Doorstep. You can still pick up a bag with a list of requested items at church. Please return your filled grocery bag by the end of the month.

Men's Group Served Cheer

Last week, our Men's Group connected with the downtown community by offering a water station for the Irishfest 5k. The many runners and walkers appreciated the cups of water and tissues provided by our church as they passed by our building.

Irishfest race director, Erinn Renyer, passed on words of thanks from the race participants:
" I can't thank you enough for your enthusiasm and cheery disposition for these runners and walkers... it is groups like yours that help build fellowship in our community."

Friends, lets continue to think of new ways to reach out to our community and make a difference for the good of the city, and for the transformation of the world!

Third Grade Bible Presentations

Presenting our third graders with Bibles is a long-standing United Methodist tradition. Last Sunday, our third graders and their parents gathered at the 9:30 service to receive their Bibles from our congregation. They will spend the next six weeks learning how to use this valuable tool and to explore God's word.

Children
New Children's Sunday School Check-in!

Beginning Sunday, March 19th, there will be a new check-in procedure for Children's Sunday School. Check-in will happen in the Celebration Room. Melissa Evans will be stationed at the wooden kiosk at the northeast corner of the Celebration Room, and kiddos will be checked in via computer. A nametag will be printed for each child, and the parent will receive a corresponding label. This parental label will contain unique identifying numbers for each of the children they will be picking up, and must be presented in each room to pick up your children.

We've moved the check-in to the main floor since we have children attending Sunday School on both floors of the Mulvane Building. We are grateful to the Children's Renovation Team for this more secure and streamlined process that interfaces directly with ACS.
Scholarships for Summer Camps

Sometimes the early bird really DOES get the worm! The United Methodist Women want to encourage our children and youth at the church to participate in one of the summer camps at Chippewa or the Institute at Baker University. The camps themselves offer an early bird discount of $20 and the women will offer scholarships for anyone who fills out our camp form. The early bird registration deadline is May 1st. The scholarship is for youth or children who fills out the form by April 23. You can learn more about the camps by clicking here.

SO, you'll want to look at your busy summer calendars and decide soon if one of the many fun weeks offered is something you want to do. Camp information and the scholarship form are available at the front desk and upstairs at the children's table. We will take all of the forms turned in by April 23rd and divide up the funds available.

Turn in your scholarship forms to the front desk by April 23rd.
