Eagle Scout John Dombrowski Honored With Proclamation

Pictured Eagle Scout John Dombrowski and Mayor Carl Suraci
Christopher (John) Dombrowski, a Senior at Hillsborough High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 1776, was recognized by the Mayor and Township Committee at the January 10th Township Committee Meeting for earning the status of Eagle Scout.

John devoted many hours, worked with diligence and made sacrifices in order to achieve this highly coveted position.

John's Eagle Scout Project consisted of installing an outdoor worship area at his family's church, Bridgewater United Methodist Church.  He built a fire pit with benches, two picnic tables and a large free standing cross, completing his project on schedule .  The area has already been used for evening worship during the summer months.

John serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through his high level leadership and community service, and we are very proud that he is a member of our  community.

Safe+Sound Somerset is the county's only non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to serving those whose lives have been impacted by domestic abuse. The agency services include emergency shelter, 24-hour call and text hotline, transitional housing, legal advocacy, outreach counseling, community education and volunteer Domestic Violence Response Teams.

Safe+Sound Somerset has instituted the first 24 Hour TOLL FREE hotline to accept voice calls and text messages and has been serving people affected by domestic violence for over 37 years.  Their mission is to empower survivors of domestic abuse and engage the community to break the cycle of violence.

By re-inventing & re-branding their name from the Resource Center of Somerset to Safe+Sound Somerset they have successfully maintained pace with changing demands of the clientele they serve and help better represent the programs and services they have to offer.

The Somerset County Business Partnership recognized Safe+Sound Somerset with the Business Partnership's Economic Vitality Award for 2016 and, at the January 10th Township Committee Meeting, Hillsborough's Mayor and Township Committee recognized the efforts of Safe+Sound Somerset in aiding victims of domestic violence and helping improve the quality of life for the people in our community.

Join the Home Fire Campaign

Each year, the Red Cross responds to nearly 66,000 disasters, the vast majority of which are home fires. So we set a goal to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries in the US by 25% by 2020.

On average:
  • 7 people die every day from a home fire
  • 36 people suffer injuries as a result of home fires every day
  • Over $7 billion in property damage occurs every year
Can your family escape in just 2 minutes? You can keep your family safe with 2 simple steps.

Step 1. Practice your 2-minute drill. Make sure your family can safely escape a home fire in under 2 minutes. Use our worksheets to plan and prepare your 2-minute drill today.
Step 2. Test your smoke alarms monthly. Make sure you and your family are alerted as soon as a fire is detected. If the smoke alarm isn't working, change the batteries.

Cervical Cancer Is Preventable, Treatable with Screenings and Immunizations

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month!  The Somerset County Board of Freeholders  and the  Morris-Somerset Regional Chronic Disease Coalition (RCDC)  and its partners are urging women of all income levels to take advantage of life-saving screenings, immunizations and tests, and to become informed about prevention and early detection options, which decrease risk for infections and cervical cancer.

The Board of Freeholders will present a proclamation at the Jan. 10 freeholders' meeting.  The proclamation will be shared with local municipalities to adopt.

Cervical cancer can be detected with a simple pelvic exam and pap test.  A vaccine is available to prevent cancer caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the main cause of cervical cancer.
