Mayors Wellness Celebrates 10th Anniversary in Hillsborough Township

Pictured: Mayor Frank DelCore, Siobhan Spano and Mary Decker
"Hillsborough will renew our commitment to health during the 10th Anniversary Year of the Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC)," announced Mayor Frank DelCore at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.

The partnership between Hillsborough and the Mayors Wellness Campaign began 10 years ago in an effort to encourage the local community to get on the path to active living and healthier lifestyles. The Mayors Wellness Campaign is an initiative of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities. The Mayors Wellness Campaign was started in response to an Institute of Medicine report on rising rates of obesity, so one of the main goals of the MWC is to increase opportunities for New Jersey residents to participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of improving overall health and reducing and health care costs.  In recent years, Mayors involved with the Campaign have also tackled advance care planning, end-of-life care, smoking cessation, health literacy, and chronic disease management.

Hillsborough Township Ranks Among Safest Places in New Jersey
ValuePenguin Releases 2016 Study Ranking Hillsborough #2

"Hillsborough Township was ranked 2nd amongst Safest Places in New Jersey in the Big City Rank," announced Mayor Frank DelCore at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.

"It is my honor to announce this most recent recognition that Hillsborough Township has received," stated Mayor Frank DelCore.

The ValuePenguin Report released its "2016 Safest  Places in New Jersey" in late August, naming Hillsborough Township the 2nd Safest Place in New Jersey in the city size of over 30,000.  Value Penguin utilizes the most recent FBI Crime Report information to generate the rankings.  To further address the variation between larger and smaller municipalities, ValuePenguin separated the safest cities into three categories:  towns based on population between 5,000 - 15,000, midsize cities with populations between 15,000 and 30,000 and then larger size cities with populations in excess of 30,000.

Alert: Telephone Scams

The Hillsborough Police Department has been receiving reports of telephone and online scam attempts.  Some of the more common scams being reported are from sources claiming to be with the IRS, Publishing Clearing House, Microsoft and Law Enforcement Agencies claiming they have a loved one under arrest and they need to wire them funds for bail.

Residents should at all times exercise extreme caution when contacted by any entity requesting immediate payment for unsolicited purposes.  The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has a Fraud Toolkit which contains useful information to help avoid being taken advantage of.  The toolkit can be found at their website www.fightingfraud.nj.gov

Learn How to Offer a Healing Touch to Animals
Certified Reiki Master to provide introduction to Japanese healing technique at local library

Sherri Lynn, a Certified Reiki Master, will provide an introduction to Reiki on Animals at Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's Hillsborough Library branch, located at 379 S. Branch Road.

During the program, Lynn will provide a general introduction to Reiki, a Japanese energy healing technique, and will talk about the benefits of this healing technique on animals. Participants are invited to bring photos of their own animals for distance healing, if time allows.

"Animals have been part of my life for as long as I can remember," said Lynn. "In addition to caring for my own cats, dogs, hamsters, and goldfish growing up, I enjoyed visiting anyone with pets - especially my grandfather and his pet skunk! I also enjoyed visiting farms and zoos. As an adult, I have developed a keen eye for wildlife while hiking or just driving down the road. With each animal that shows up in my life, I am reassured that this is the work I'm meant to be doing.  And I am excited to be sharing this gift with others. Few things are as rewarding as looking into the soul of an animal."

"The benefits to animals receiving Reiki are endless," Lynn further explained. "I have witnessed dramatic physical, emotional and behavioral improvements after just a single treatment."

Registration is required to attend this program. For more information or to register for this program, call 908-369-2200 or visit SCLSNJ.org
