Future Uncertain for OSU Camp to Foster Newsroom Diversity

2/27/2012

By Laura McCandlish

Non-white employees make up less than 13 percent -a shrinking percentage-of the nation's newsrooms, according to the American Society of Newspaper Editors. For nearly 20 years, a rare summer program has encouraged more minority students in Oregon to consider journalism. But it lacks funding to ensure its future.

Raju Woodward sticks out in the lily-white newsroom of the Corvallis Gazette-Times. He was adopted from Calcutta when he was two-months-old.

Woodward: "I know the very first day I started here was back when I was in sports, and I answered one of the phone calls from a coach calling in a score. And he was like, 'Raju, what kind of a name is that? An Indian sportswriter?' And I was just kind of really shocked."

The reason he chose this career path? The High School Journalism Institute.

Woodward: "It was life-changing. It is the reason I'm in journalism now." Click here to continue.

AAJA Media Advisory on Jeremy Lin News Coverage
Feb. 22, 2012

As NBA player Jeremy Lin's prowess on the court continues to attract international attention and grab headlines, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) would like to remind media outlets about relevance and context regarding coverage of race.

In the past weeks, as more news outlets report on Lin, his game and his story, AAJA has noticed factual inaccuracies about Lin's background as well as an alarming number of references that rely on stereotypes about Asians or Asian Americans.

Please give careful consideration to the following tips to ensure fair, accurate and sensitive portrayals of Lin and others who are Asian American.

AAJA and AAJA MediaWatch
any news organizations that have questions or concerns about news coverage and race. We all have the same goal: good journalism.

The NewU Start-up Loft @ UNITY '12

supported by The Ford Foundation

Are you a journalist who wants to start up your own company, and have no idea how to do it?  Do you have a company and need to find a way to connect to others who can help you grow?  Come to UNITY 2012 this August in Las Vegas, because we're going to help you take the next steps towards business success!

For three days, entrepreneurs will convene in a large room with fellow start-up CEO's who are current or former journalists, angel investors and business coaches. The people behind NewU, a program that helps journalists of color become media owners, will offer relevant panel discussions and pitch sessions so you can learn the art of convincing an investor to support your company. At the end of each day, we'll have a meetup where you'll get the chance to rub elbows with those who are already in the game, and are winning.

Come to Las Vegas, register for UNITY and sign up for our Start-up Loft. The Loft will be open from 10-7 Thursday and Friday of the conference and from 9-6 on Saturday.  Come each morning to sign up for one-on-one coaching sessions and panel discussions. Details for signing up coming soon.

Visit the UNITY website for more information about the NewU Project.
