THE HOT HAZY DAYS OF SUMMER

We hope everyone is enjoying our beautiful summer!

Many of our individuals are attending summer school, taking part in field trips and preparing for the August Regents.  Our vegetable garden is growing and our baseball team is active.
Our individuals also took full advantage of the hot temperatures in the 90's, by taking several enjoyable dips in the pool. Summer certainly goes by fast!

WILLIAM L.....ALWAYS SHARING A SMILE!

William L. has spent the last 2 ½ years here at Vanderheyden, and has made a lasting impression on our community with his smile and his actions.

Our 12th Grader from Queens was the recipient of the "Royal Stars Award", that was given out at our Graduation Ceremony on June 24th.

William says he loves to help fellow residents out whenever they need, and in whatever way he can. He said he does this by talking to them about their problems, and guides them into doing the right thing in situations.

Not only does William use his smile to make others happy, he makes a difference in many lives by volunteering in the Vanderheyden community, helps with a variety of chores, and tries to be respectful of all.

When he's not volunteering or helping others, William is an active participant on several of our sports teams, which include track, flag football, snowboarding and soccer. William can also be found "under the boards" on the basketball court as a Small Forward, and behind the plate as a Catcher on Vanderheyden's softball team.  He was also one of Vanderheyden's "Team of Five" who won several medals in the New York State Special Olympics held in June at SUNY Brockport.

William definitely fits the bill of a Vanderheyden "Royal Star" recipient!

MEET OUR DIRECTOR OF QA, JERRY MONTRYM

Our new Director of Quality Assurance has quite an extensive background when it comes to making things better not only in the workplace, but in his community as well.

Jerry Montrym became a team member at Vanderheyden in early June, after spending most of his career in various New York State agencies.

At the Office of Mental Health, Jerry held the title of Director of Bureau of Quality Improvement. Jerry also was a Program Evaluation Specialist at the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities locations in Central New York and Long Island, and was also a Team Leader in the New York City area for the agency formerly known as the Commission on Quality of Care.

What led Jerry to choose Vanderheyden as his next career destination, was the idea and model of "Sanctuary", in which our organization is just one of fifty agencies in the country to receive this certification. He says working at Vanderheyden was an excellent opportunity to become more involved in direct care work.

As part of his duties, Jerry makes sure Vanderheyden stays in compliance with state and federal regulations. He says his goal is to help the workplace become pro-active, by evaluating and fixing potential problems before they occur. When responding to incidents, Jerry wants to know what exactly happened, why did it happen, what circumstances led to the problem, and, to develop ways on how to fix it for the future.

When Jerry is not donning his Director cap at Vanderheyden, he can be found wearing a uniform for one of Rotterdam's many Fire Districts. For the last four years, Jerry has been in the role of Fire Commissioner, after volunteering in the same fire district for the past thirty years.

In his spare time, Jerry shares his love of outdoor activities such as fishing and camping, with his wife of 45 years, his two sons and four grandchildren.
