Letter from the President
Billie Dickson

Billie Dickson

Our meeting on March 21 is on the first day of spring. Even though our winter has not been a harsh one, we all look forward to the rebirth of nature emerging around us, and the inspiration to paint more of our outside world.

This is a perfect time for a plein air workshop, and WOWS has one with Andy Evanson beginning April 18. Just a few spots are left, so contact Yuki Hall to save your place.

Our Spring Open Show will be May 19 through June 2 at the Town and Country Fine Art Center, with Charlynn Knight as the juror. Finish up those paintings for this always popular show.

Dues are payable in the spring. They are $35, but if you pay by May 19 you will receive a $5 discount. So get your check to Membership Chair Shirley Harbaugh or Treasurer Terri Anderson to take advantage of this bargain.

We will be looking for YOU to fill any Board and Committee vacancies this month. Election of officers is in April. Please contact any Board member to share your interest, or, just wait at home for our call. Vacancies will be announced at the March meeting.

Vivian Ripley will do a watercolor demo at our March 21 meeting. See you there at 6:30 pm at the Springfield Art Museum.

Happy painting,

Billie Dickson

Program Speaker
Vivian Ripley

Rush of WaterOur speaker for February is Vivian Ripley, an

educator and artist for more than four decades. Inherent in all her works is the beauty of color and how it is affected by light and shade. She is proficient in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, and colored pencil--always striving to achieve beauty in each medium through her emotional use of color and tone. Vivian has been professionally active in group and individual shows since 1975. She regularly teaches pastel, watercolor and colored pencil, and is also in demand for demonstrations and workshops in these disciplines. Her works are in collections throughout the United States, Canada, Britain, France and Japan.

Of particular interest is painting on location. The excitement and involvement with the moment is particularly rewarding. A favorite area is Ontario, North of Georgian Bay, where the artist travels at least twice yearly--painting and giving workshops. Vivian was Artist-in-Residence at Harper's Ferry National Historical Park, Harpers' Ferry, West Virginia in 1999. Vivian's special watercolor technique is spotlighted in a 6-page chapter in The Watercolor Landscape Techniques of 23 International Artists, published by International Artist.

Vivian is a signature member of OWS, Central Ohio Watercolor Society, Degas Pastel Society, both Wyoming and Missouri Watercolor Societies, International Society of Acrylic Painters, charter member of Ohio Plein Air Society, and holds membership in several central Ohio art groups. She recently won the President's Award from the Wyoming Watercolor Society and the Winsor and Newton Watercolor Award from the Cincinnati Art Club national show, "Viewpoint 2011."

Vivian will be doing a demonstration of watercolor on gesso and will also speak about using darks first in a watercolor painting.

Some of her paintings can be seen at: www.artinview.com and www.ohiopleinairsociety.com.

Susan Webb Tregay, N.W.S., T.W.S.A., W.H.S. Workshop
October 1-4, 2012

The Fairborn Art Association is sponsoring a four-day Watermedia workshop for intermediate to advanced artists, instructed by Susan Webb Tregay entitled, "Master Disaster, Five New Strategies for Outstanding Paintings!" The workshop will be held Monday through Thursday, October 1 - 4, 2012, in the Fairborn Art Association Gallery located in the rear of the Fairborn Senior Apartment Building, 221 N. Central Ave., Fairborn. Mystified as to how to take your work to the next level-or beyond? Susan can show you how. In this workshop you will create a "Flip Book" of color and design strategies that will take the mystery out of all of those elements and principles of design combinations. Taking a painting to completion is, by far, the hardest part of art. This workshop is designed to help through the last twenty percent of your painting. Throughout this workshop artists will be working on 2 or 3 unfinished paintings. Ugly, problematic paintings are the best! Then these strategies will be applied to a fresh painting or two. Susan recently won 2nd place in the Miami Watercolor Society's 2011 Online Exhibition. She also won an award at Watercolor USA, which gave her signature membership in the Watercolor Honor Society. Palette Magazine #38 featured Susan on the cover and in a colorful seven page article. Cost for this workshop is $180 F.A.A. member, $195 non-member. Limit 22 students. To register for this workshop, please send a non-refundable check for $40 made payable to Fairborn Art Association, to Jane Trame, 8881 Haddix Rd., Fairborn, Ohio 45324. For further information contact Jane at 937-902-8875, 937-878-1009 or email janefvt@yahoo.com.
