Watkins Landmark Construction Dispatch
February 2014

Over the years, Watkins Landmark Construction has been incredibly fortunate to build many faith-based facilities.  Whether a church, synagogue or school, we take great pride in our faith-based projects.  More often than not, the architecture is much more intricate on a church than an office building.  Furthermore, a successful project for a faith-based organization is something every member appreciates.  And in the case of our Episcopal Church Center of Ocean Beach featured in our main article, it provides a much needed service to the local community.

As mentioned above, our featured article this month is on our renovation project at he Episcopal Church Center of Ocean Beach (ECC).  The article is written by David Torres, the Estimator / Project Manager on ECC.   Jody at IWTG Ground Breaking Ceremony Our Random Notes section starts off with several links to the press for our Stadium 2 and Site Renovation project at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.  With the BNP Paribas Open just days away, you will see more and more coverage in the media of this project.  Our Random Notes section also includes updates and pictures from our Webpass, St. Therese of Carmel and Holiday Inn Express of Indio projects.  And of course, we wouldn't forget a birthday wish to one of our employees in our newsletter.

As always, if you have any comments or questions about this newsletter, please do not hesitate to drop us an email.  Your comments have helped shape this newsletter over the years.

Sincerely,

Watkins Landmark Renovates the Episcopal Church Center of OB
Episcopal Church Center of Ocean Beach

By David Torres, Project Manager

In November of 2013, Watkins Landmark was fortunate enough to be awarded the Episcopal Church Center Renovation project located in the Ocean Beach community of San Diego. The project, consisting of a full interior remodel and various onsite improvements, is our first with Platt-Whitelaw Architects. There have been a number of obstacles we've had to overcome, from working in a very active facility, to ensuring the project is in a tourable condition for the Archbishop's arrival in February 21st, 2014.

The Episcopal Church Center (ECC) -  located in the heart of Ocean Beach - aids the community tremendously in a number of ways. Loaves and Fishes, a food pantry which operates out of the Center, provides meals for the less fortunate to help all stay fed and well nourished. Every Saturday morning, the ECC holds a free medical clinic for the less fortunate where all are welcomed to receive medical attention. Nearly every day, twice a day, the ECC also holds Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for all who are looking for assistance with coping and bettering their lives. The improvements we are making to the facility, which include a new wheelchair lift, an entirely new interior layout and new state of the art commercial kitchen, will assist in bettering their daily operations. As you can imagine, the ECC is an extremely active facility, and coordinating work in such an environment is definitely a challenge, but we here at Watkins Landmark Construction are accustomed to working in such conditions, and were up for the challenge.

With a project team led onsite by Bill Bagby, Project Superintendent, Kristian Burchat, Project Manager and David Torres, Estimator/Project Manager, Watkins Landmark Construction has coordinated work at the active facility with the goal of having the least amount of impact with the ECC's many daily operations. Construction has been extremely smooth onsite, with Watkins Landmark having received letters and comments from ECC members complimenting the construction team for their professionalism, respect and understanding. We here at Watkins Landmark Construction know that there is no "I" in team, and a big part of our efficiency onsite is due to having a great team of subcontractors and vendors who are committed to the common goal of turning over a great project.

February 21st marked the arrival of the Episcopal Church's Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori to the ECC. The ECC hosted more than 200 church members for the event, which included a blessing of the church center. The planned activities of the day meant the project had to reach a safe, tourable condition for the attendees to get an idea of the finished product midway through the project's schedule. Team members worked 12+ hour days and weekends to ensure the project met this important client deadline. After all the man hours and intense on goings on site, the team was able to pull it off, and received positive reviews from all visitors.

All in all, the project has been a pleasure to work on. For Watkins Landmark to be associated with the ECC - a center that builds people not only spiritually, but physically as well - is an honor, and we are very appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of the project.
