PTO shout out

Happy April!

The end of the school year is right around the corner and we are well underway with planning for next year. Currently, we are working on filling Chair positions for the 2012-2013 PTO Board. If you, or someone you know, is interested in volunteering, please let us know. There are positions for all levels of availability, and we will be happy to work with anyone to match these positions with his/her individual strengths.

As always, thank you for your support this year.  It is the goal of the PTO to provide the best possible atmosphere for the staff and students at WCES, in order to promote the highest level of learning.

This truly is a team effort and could not be done without all of you.  Thanks again and please consider volunteering for a PTO Chair or support  position and help us build a stronger PTO.

Budget cuts
The school board voted unanimously to accept Dr. Davis' proposal to cut all teacher assistant positions and 53 teaching positions County-wide.
Limited funds will be provided to each principal to hire back a small percentage of staffing. This decision was made
based on the projected $9.6 million shortfall for next school year.

Please plan to attend the Union County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, April 16th at 500 Main Street from 7-10 PM, wearing green to support funding for our schools.

If UCPS can get additional funding, especially from the State, Dr. Davis is committed to hiring back teachers.

Let your voice be heard!

WASEP

Volunteers 1

Fall 2012 WASEP Volunteers

The Wesley Chapel After School Enrichment Program (WASEP) is very popular. The PTO organizes various fun programs each Fall and Spring and classes are tailored for a specific age group/grade.

Each class requires a parent volunteer to:

  • sign in children and monitor snack time
  •  escort children to bathrooms and the classroom
  • ensure the children behave properly
  • provide assistance to the instructor as needed
  • escort children to the parent pick up zone

This Spring, we offered 13 classes and we did not have 13 committed parent volunteers.  For the PTO to continue this wonderful program, we ask you to PLEASE consider volunteering in the Fall.

The total amount of Fall classes will be determined by the total number of dedicated volunteers.

WASEP volunteers will be given first priority during registration and a voucher for future WASEP classes.

Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering during the Fall session.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Volunteer commitment is for 6 weeks
from 1:40-3:40PM.

Please contact Mindy Reed at rustyandmindy@carolina.rr.com

In addition, the PTO is looking for the following WASEP support positions:

Instructor Coordinator

Attendance Coordinator

Class Coordinator

Snack Coordinator

Volunteer Coordinator

GET YOUR PLATE IN SHAPE

Before you eat, do you think about what you will put onto your plate? A balanced plate sets you on the path to success for your whole day - a day when one healthy meal leads to another, which leads to another.

Get your plate in shape with these ideas:

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Eat a variety of vegetables, especially dark-green, red and orange vegetables plus beans and peas. Fresh, frozen and canned vegetables all count. Choose "reduced sodium" or "no-salt-added" canned vegetables.
  • Make at least half your grains whole. Choose 100% whole-grain breads, cereals, crackers, pasta and brown rice. Check the ingredients list on food packages to find whole-grain foods.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk. Fat-free and low-fat milk have the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories.
  • Vary your protein choices. Eat a variety of foods from the protein food group each week, such as seafood, nuts and beans, as well as lean meat, poultry and eggs. Twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate. Keep meat and poultry portions small and lean.
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Choose 100% fruit juice instead of fruit-flavored drinks.
  • Select fruit for dessert and eat sugary desserts less often.
  • Cook more often at home, where you are in control of what's in your food.
  • When eating out, choose lower calorie menu options. Choose dishes that include vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
