Taking Care of Your Ticker
By Dr. Nicole Murphy

Many of you who come in to the office know how much I care about your nervous system. I want it working at peak at all times. The reason this is so important is because I care about how your whole body works, and the nervous system runs EVERYTHING in your body. In caring for your nervous system, you also care about your heart, and February is  National Heart Month . I don't mean the box that looks like a heart and is filled with chocolates. I mean your heart that beats every day and pumps blood to every part of the body!

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States?  There are many factors that have led to this.  Some are genetic, but there are many that you can control.
  • Inactivity. More and more info is coming out about how detrimental sitting all day is, even if you are active after work.  For those of you who go from sitting at the desk to sitting on the couch, things are even worse.  When we sit all day at work, good cholesterol goes down by about 20% and the rate at which we burn calories also decreases.  Cholesterol and carrying extra weight can both contribute to heart disease.  Get more activity, not only after work, but during.  Every 20 minutes stand up and do 2 squats.  This will get the large muscles in your legs working and blood pumping again.
  • Nutrition. Eat less processed or fast food and more whole foods.  Proteins, fruits, and vegetables are all essential.  Eat a colorful variety, and don't forget healthy fats!
  • Smoking. If you had perfect genes, ate the best diet, and were active throughout the day, the act of smoking alone still increases your risk of heart disease.  If you are trying to stop and want a little help, acupuncture can give you a step in the right direction.
  • Blood Pressure.  Your blood pressure should fluctuate based on your body's needs.  If you are calm and relaxed, it should be lower. But if all of a sudden, a tiger jumps through the window and comes after you, your blood pressure should jump up, and jump up quick!  When we are exposed to stressful situations, our bodies are built to kick into high gear and be able to fight or flee.  We should only be in fight or flight mode about 10 % of our lives. Living in fight or flight is terrible for our bodies.  In the US today, we tend to be in fight or flight closer to 90% of the time due to stress and increased blood pressure.  This takes its toll on the body, especially the heart.  Did you know that chiropractic has been shown to help reduced blood pressure as much as being on two different blood pressure medications?  Click Here  for the link if you are interested in reading.  Really what an adjustment does is help pull you out of fight or flight and back into rest and restore, giving your body a break and helping you adapt to your best in better ways.
So this month and every month after, start taking better care of you.  Be active, eat well, and get adjusted.  Your body with thank you for it by giving you many more years of feeling good and staying healthy.
