Catholic Schools Week
York Catholic will be joining the nationwide celebration of Catholic Schools January 28-February 3. Students will honor service to the community, faculty/staff, and religious life throughout the week with a variety of activities including reading to children at partner schools, delivering gift bags and thank you notes to our bus drivers and teachers, and helping the cafeteria staff serve lunch.

To end our Catholic Schools Week celebration, we invite all students to show their Irish Pride on Friday, February 2, by participating in a Green and Gold dress down day!

Click here for the Catholic Schools Week schedule.  Here are a few highlights:

Family Mass & Battle of the Buildings
The public is invited to Mass with Father Jon Sawicki on Saturday, January 27, at 4 PM in the auditorium to kick-off the week, followed by Battle of the Buildings at 6 PM. This is a friendly inter-partner school competition of "minute-to-win-it" type games in the gym. The teachers are the competitors and the families are the fans. Come and cheer on the YC team!

Catholic Schools Week Grandparents Mass
Later in the week, on Thursday, February 1, at 1:30 PM, YC students and their grandparents are invited to sit together at our Catholic Schools Week Mass. To register for the Grandparents Mass, contact Jennifer Sabo at jsabo@yorkcatholic.org or 717-846-8871 x222 by January 29.

Talent Show
Our annual Talent Show takes place Friday, February 2, at 1:30 PM where our students get an opportunity to showcase their talents for their peers and teachers.

Snowcoming Dance
Student Council is hosting a casual Snowcoming Dance Saturday, February 3, from 7-9 PM in the cafeteria for students in grades 9-12. Students from other schools are not permitted to attend.  All students must adhere to the casual dress code found on pages 15-16 of the student handbook/agenda. Tomorrow is the last day to purchase tickets during lunches at $6 per person.

We hope you can be a part of the celebration and we thank you for supporting Catholic Schools.
Sophomores Getting Ready for the SAT Exam
Any interested sophomore is invited and encouraged to take the PSAT 10 this spring at York Catholic. The PSAT 10 mirrors the PSAT, and offers a tenth grader the opportunity to preview and practice for the actual PSAT without stress over score reporting. Scores from the PSAT 10 are not reported and do not impact college applications in any way. Students benefit from the opportunity to engage with the material and become familiar with the format of the test before taking the PSAT in October of their junior year.   PSAT test scores do count; those scores are referenced to determine Merit Scholars, and free practice tests are available online through College Board. Features of the PSAT 10 are as follows:
  • The PSAT 10 is a three-hour exam, featuring a math section and a reading/writing section.
  • Each section is worth 760 points for a possible total composite of 1520.
  • The math section targets algebra and advanced math problems. A spring testing session is optimal as sophomores will be concluding a year of Algebra II.
The test will be offered in the York Catholic library from 8-11 AM on Saturday, April 7. Any interested sophomore must register by February 15. Click here for the registration form; forms are also available in the main office and in the Forms and Documents section of the YC website at www.yorkcatholic.org. Cost per student is $20.00, and checks can be made out to York Catholic. Questions may be directed to Kathy Hand at khand@yorkcatholic.org .

Musical Ads
This year's Musical production of Fiddler on the Roof will involve over 100 York Catholic students as members of the cast, pit orchestra, costume crew, and stage crew.  We work very hard to provide the students with an educational and fun experience within a limited budget.  While many local schools are spending well over $50,000 to produce a spring musical, we try to produce our musical for $15,000 a year. Our ticket sales only pay for a portion of our overall expense.  Additional funds come from  the advertisements in the playbill program and concessions sales.

If you are interested in purchasing an ad of support for the playbill program, please c lick here for the Ad form or go to the Forms and Documents section of the YC website.  Ads must be received by February 1.

Thank you for your support!
Let The Beat Go On -- Get Your Heart Checked!
A free Heart Screening Clinic is open to students in the Central PA region, 12 to 19 years old, who are not currently under the care of a cardiologist. The clinic will be held Saturday, February 10, from 9 AM-3 PM at Apple Hill Medical Center, Entrance A, Lower Level, 25 Monument Drive, in York. All students will receive a free vitals check and electrocardiogram (EKG). For students whose results indicate the need for additional testing, echocardiograms will also be provided on site, free of charge.

Pre-registration is required online at www.peytonwalker.org  before February 4.  Limited spaces are available and are filling quickly. For more information, please contact info@peytonwalker.org or 717-697-5511. The clinic is hosted by The Peyton Walker Foundation in partnership with Penn State Health Children's Hospital, WellSpan Health, and PA State Representative Kristin Phillips-Hill. The Peyton Walker Foundation was established in honor of Peyton Walker, a 2012 Trinity High School graduate who passed away unexpectedly from sudden cardiac arrest at the young age of 19.
Inclement Weather
During inclement weather that would cause a school closing or delay of schedule, York Catholic will call/text/email you through our One Call Now Emergency Notification system.  Other modes of notification include WGAL TV-8, Fox43, and the YC website.  Students from individual school districts are automatically excused if their district closes and does not provide transportation to YCHS.  The exceptions to this are Southern and Southeastern.  These students follow York Catholic's delay and closing schedule.
