Holiday Office Hours
Dear Neighbors,

Happy Holidays to all of our neighbors!  To those who are traveling, I wish you a safe journey.  Of behalf of everyone in the 44th Ward Service Office, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa (and for the "rest-of-us," Happy Festivus)!

Organizer Rich Pfeiffer and myself met with representatives from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church last week to hear the parish's concerns about the proposed changes to the 2012 Gay Pride Parade. We discussed moving the start time back to 12:00 Noon to help accommodate Sunday services along the parade route. After consulting with the various City departments, we believe this is an agreeable compromise to help keep the parade safe and manageable while respecting the diversity of our neighborhood.

Thank you to everyone who has generously given to our first annual 44th Ward Donation Drive.  We will still be collecting toiletries until the end of the month and will then distribute to our local charities.

If you have not yet had the opportunity, make sure to visit the Rink at Wrigley.  For more information, please click here

There will be No Parking on Clark Street (both sides) from Addison to Clark beginning on Friday, December 31 at 6:00pm through Saturday, January 1 at 6:00am for New Years Eve.

Sincerely,

Alderman Tom Tunney

44th Ward Safety Updates

Our office attended this month's Chicago Police CompStat meeting, where Superintendent McCarthy meets with the local Commanders to go over the recent crimes in their areas and create plans to pinpoint patterns and attack problem spots.  The highest occurrence of robberies in the 19th and 23rd Districts takes place over the weekend, with the most taking between Saturday night and Sunday morning.  In the 44th Ward, the far majority of these crimes take place in the late nights hours during the First Watch.  Everyone involved is dedicated to providing effective police attention where it is needed and getting the most out of our tactical police officers' time.

During the holiday season, the number of theft from vehicle incidents usually increases. Please do not leave packages in your vehicle in plain sight, lock them in the trunk. Don't use your vehicle as a holding center for packages while you shop. Thieves will watch cars parked in shopping areas and note the cars that shoppers place packages into, making those vehicles prime targets for thefts. If you put packages in your vehicle while shopping and want to continue your shopping, move your car so the thieves do not know where it is parked.   Keep an eye out for identity theft:  carefully review your bank and credit card statements for inconsistencies.

If you are traveling for the holiday season, please make sure to lock all doors, garages and windows.  You may also want to alert a neighbor to keep an eye on your residence and report any suspicious activity.

2012 Parking Meter Rate Adjustment

On-street metered parking rates in Chicago will be adjusted in early 2012 as part of the parking meter concession agreement.

Inside the Loop, rates will be adjusted from $5.00 to $5.75 per hour and a half-rate applies from 9pm to 8am.

In the Central Business District outside the Loop (bounded by Lake Michigan to the East, North Avenue to the North, Halsted to the West, and Roosevelt Rd. to the South) rates will be adjusted from $3.00 to $3.50 per hour.

In all other areas of the City (including the 44th Ward), rates will be adjusted from $1.50 to $1.75 per hour.

The transition to the new rates will begin on January 2nd starting with the Loop and moving outward into the neighborhoods.  Weather conditions permitting, the transition to new rates should be completed by January 31st.

As the transition moves forward, motorists are only responsible for paying the posted rates on meters.

Christmas Tree Recycling in the 44th Ward

Saturday, January 7, 2012

On Saturday, January 7th, my office, with help from Mahogany Builders, will be collecting Christmas trees for recycling. Please leave your tree near the area where your trash is collected (curbside or alley) in the morning. We will be collecting trees throughout the morning and afternoon.

You can also drop your tree off at the Blaine School (1420 W. Grace St.) parking lot between the hours of 10:00am- 4:00pm. The trees will be mulched.

Free recycled mulch will be available at the parking lot east of Cannon Dr. at Fullerton Ave. beginning after Friday, January 13.
