Dear Neighbors,

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced today that the CTA will invest $10 million to hire 50 full-time police officers to patrol rail and bus stations across the city.  The 50 full-time police officers will come from the Chicago Police Academy.  Recruits are scheduled to begin the Academy in the fall of this year. They will go through six-months of intensive training, with officers expected to be detailed to the Public Transportation Section by spring 2012.

Due to the excessive heat and thunderstorm warning, our annual 44th Ward Senior Picnic is rescheduled for September 15th. The location and time will be the same for September: 11am - 1:30pm at Wellington and Lake Shore Drive in the park.

Tile installation for the new Belmont Underpass mural has begun! Artists will be working on the the project throughout the week and volunteers are welcome: please call the Chicago Public Art Group at 312-427-2724 if you would like to volunteer or join them at the underpass in the next few weeks.

Beatlemania returns to Chicago!  Paul McCartney will be playing two concerts at Wrigley Field on Sunday, July 31st and Monday, August 1st.  You can find information on street closures, parking restrictions and what to expect the day of the concert by clicking here.

My full-time staff (Bennett Lawson, Denise Poelsterl, Max Bever and Norine Hughes) will be out of the office on Friday, July 29 for a mandatory furlough.  Additional staff will be present to assist constituents and sell parking permits.

Lastly, the brand new 44th Ward website is now up and running! There are improved pages for safety, parking and street cleaning information.  Check out the new site at www.44thward.org

Sincerely,

Alderman Tom Tunney
