Dear Neighbors,

Sunday will mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.  In respect for the many we lost on that day, we ask that you please hang the American flag in honor of our fallen heroes.

The annual Lakeview East Festival of the Arts returns to Broadway Avenue this weekend.  Street closures will begin at 5:00pm tomorrow, Friday, September 9th.  Broadway will be closed to traffic from Belmont to Roscoe.  Please plan accordingly.  Suggested donation is $5.  For more information and a map of the artists' locations, please click here.

Please note there will be parking restrictions again this weekend on both Halsted (Belmont to Buckingham) and Belmont (Halsted to Clark) from 12:00 Midnight to 5:00am. You can read my statement and find more information on the pilot ban by clicking here.

Sincerely,

Alderman Tom Tunney

Donations for 800 W. Cornelia Fire

On Saturday, August 27 there was a five-alarm fire that began just before 2:00pm on the 800 block of Cornelia.  The Chicago Fire Department was on the scene to control the blaze.  Two firefighters were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with minor injuries but thankfully there were no serious injuries.

The fire critically damaged several units in two buildings, destroying personal property and displacing over 100 residents.  Center on Halsted is joining forces with Caribou Coffee and others to help our neighbors recover from this devastating event.

You can donate money online through the Center on Halsted by clicking here.  Be sure to write 'fire victims' in the "additional information" section and 100% of your donation will go directly to those in need.

Caribou Coffee is leading a neighborhood effort to donate clothes to those who lost their own in the fire. You can drop off donations at the Caribou Coffee locations at 3500 North Halsted Street or 3300 North Broadway. Center on Halsted will then help distribute the clothes to the victims and any clothes not used by the victims will be donated to the Brown Elephant.

If you can, please donate what you can to assist our neighbors in their time of need.

MWRD Water Barrel Program

As you know, this summer has been one of the rainiest in recorded history.  As part of their Stormwater Management program, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago offers rain barrels for purchase to all residents within Cook County.

Rain barrels are an inexpensive way to promote the use of green technology.  An added benefit is providing relief to sewer systems during rain storms.  Barrel specifications are as follows:

-         55 gallon capacity

-         21" diameter

-         34" height

-         Available in black, blue, terra cotta or grey

The barrels cost $51.00 each and are eligible for a 50% rebate from the City of Chicago's Sustainable Backyard Program if purchased before December 31, 2011.  Residents may purchase barrels online at www.mwrd.org, and pick up at one of their four Chicagoland locations.
