Economic Groups Meet to Discuss Future of Algiers

Members of the Algiers Economic Development Foundation (AEDF) and the Algiers' Community Foundation, ADD's 501(c)(3), recently met to discuss how they can work together as a team to help all businesses as well as the community at large in Algiers.

It was a successful meeting with many great ideas shared and a wonderful team building session between the two organizations. Stanton McNeely, Chair of AEDF, and Tom Arnold, ADD Board Member, led the discussion.

Fitness Center at Federal City in Search of New Operator, Will Remain Open for Business

Last week, leaders of the Algiers Development District (ADD) and the YMCA of Greater New Orleans jointly announced that the YMCA will no longer remain as the operator of the $6.1 million facility that opened in 2012.

There will be no disruption in services to the 800 plus members that currently use the facility daily as a fitness center and all essential employees will stay to operate the fitness facility as part of the transition plan to a new operator.

"We respect the YMCA's decision and wish them nothing but the best of luck with their remaining locations that continue to run and operate in the Greater New Orleans area," said Kathy Lynn Honaker, the Executive Director at ADD.

ADD and Vista Louisiana - the new master developer - have already met with as many as three entities that have expressed interest in operating the 32,000-square-foot center. The 4,000-square-foot expansion project that will include an expanded workout facility, heated pool and wet lockers is already underway and remains on track to open this summer.

"The ADD team has been a great partner for the YMCA," says YMCA President/CEO Gordon Wadge. "Our organizational mission is to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities and, in keeping with that mission, we are committed to working with ADD to make this transition a smooth one for current members as well as for the community at large."

Thank you, YMCA, for three great years of partnership and for helping the ADD ensure a smooth transition for all members and employees as we search for a new operator to serve our community!

ADD Board Names New Member: Paul A. Collins

The ADD Board welcomes Paul A. Collins to the team! Paul attended Southern University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science, Accounting. He has since stayed in the New Orleans area and remains dedicated to the economic empowerment of Algiers and the Greater New Orleans community. Paul replaces the seat left vacant by Jim Tucker, whom decided not to accept reappointment last December.

We all look forward to working with him on the continued development of a world-class community for Algiers residents, schools and businesses.
