Message from the Director

Thank you to our staff working tirelessly to improve the educational opportunities for American Indian students. BIE has made a commitment to improve communication and collaboration among our employees, schools, and students. This newsletter is our first step in providing timely updates on activities occurring throughout the BIE. I welcome your comments and input on these initiatives and encourage you to share your stories for upcoming newsletters.

Director Roessel Testifies before House Appropriations Committee 

On February 27, 2015 Indian Affairs Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn and BIE Director Dr. Charles Roessel provided testimony to the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation's Budget Hearing on the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and BIE. Their testimony proposed $2.9 billion for the agency and a $1 billion budget request to improve BIE schools including millions to build new school facilities and expand school connectivity with broadband internet. The written and video testimony  and is available on the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations website 

BIE Announces Tribal Consultations on the Johnson O'Malley Program 

BIE will be conducting tribal consultations to provide Indian tribes, school boards, parents, Indian organizations and other interested parties an opportunity to provide oral and written comments on potential issues about the Johnson O'Malley (JOM) program. These meetings are a continuation of meetings conducted by the BIA and BIE in 2012. BIE will hold four tribal consultation sessions between March 31 and April 10, 2015. Additional information and the Federal Register Notice can be found on the BIE Consultation web page.

Education Experts Gather to Improve Academic Outcomes for Native Youth

Workshop participants with Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell 

Representatives from the Department of Education, BIE and national education organizations gathered for a two-day workshop on March 10-11, 2015 at the Department of the Interior in Washington D.C. to develop recommendations for BIE to provide technical assistance to tribes that focuses on building capacity to improve academic outcomes for Native youth. As a result, BIE will develop a clear vision of successful outcomes-oriented technical assistance that includes multiple performance measures and prioritizes technical assistance topics and resources for tribes. 

 

Save the Date: Understanding Operations & Maintenance Webinar
BIE and the Division of Facility, Management and Construction have unified to offer a series of webinars to provide continuous outreach to schools and facility managers. Mr. Dale Keel will address Operations & Maintenance (O&M) funding, how it is calculated, how to use funds, historical funding, the importance of reporting actual costs, and contacts for your region. When O & M is performed as required, O & M activities extend the useful life of school facilities that is important in light of the current state of constrained budgets for major renovations and new construction. We welcome School Facility Managers, ELO Facility Managers, School Administrators, and others to expand their understanding of O&M Funding.  To register please email wendy.greyeyes@bie.edu with your name, title, and e-mail address.

Advisory Board for Exceptional Children Meeting

BIE will hold its next Advisory Board for Exceptional Children Meeting on March 26-27, 2015 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (Mountain Time) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The purpose of the meeting is to meet the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) for Indian children with disabilities. The meeting and orientation will be held at the Manuel Lujan, Jr. Indian Affairs Building, 1011 Indian School Road NW. Albuquerque, NM 87104. BIE Director to Appear on Native America Calling

Native American Calling to discuss the  proposed changes that aim to improve BIE schools. Native American Calling is a hour-long, live call-in program linking public radio stations, the Internet and listeners in Indian Country. Don't forget to listen live on Friday at 1 pm-2 pm (Eastern Time).
