Film addresses fracking
Gasland, (the Film) will be screened from 10 am to noon on Saturday, Feb 11 in Holbrooke Hall at the Dayton International Peace Museum, located at 208 West Monument Avenue (corner of N Wilkinson Street), Dayton, OH 45402.
Increasingly the introduction of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" as it is more commonly known, is driving the political and economic agenda of Ohio, with industry promises of jobs, prosperity and cheap energy for all. But what is the expense - to our environment, to our health, and to our way of life? The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology called "fracking" has unlocked a "Saudi Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us, but is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox was asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarked on a cross-country road trip to find the answer to this question. A nearby Pennsylvania town which was recently drilled reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called Gasland. Part verite` travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown, Gasland is a crosscountry odyssey with unexpected humor, uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. Come see for yourself at the Dayton Peace Museum's month EcoFilm series showing of Gasland. All are welcome, parking is free, and a discussion opportunity will follow the movie. |
| Episcopal Church World Mission Sunday: Mission is Transformational
The 2012 World Mission Sunday in the Episcopal Church will focus on Mission Is Transformational. World Mission Sunday, always observed the last Sunday after Epiphany, is February 19. The annual observation was designated to increase awareness of, and participation in, the wider global mission of the Episcopal Church.
"Conversations, presentations, and workshops at the recent Everyone Everywhere 2011 Mission Conference highlighted the transformation that all who are engaged in mission experience," explained the Rev. David Copley, Mission Personnel Officer. "Participating in God's mission for the world transforms us as individuals, communities and a Church."
World Mission Sunday is an ideal focus for Sunday School lessons, adult education, discussions and forums, prayers of the people and other events in the life of a congregation and diocese.
Copley pointed out that World Mission Sunday is an opportunity to connect local congregations and parishioners with the wider church and its international work.

Taize service
Trinity, Hamilton will offer a unique Taize worship experience of prayer and peaceful meditation on Sunday evening, February 26 at 6:30 p.m. Our choir and various instrumentalists will be presenting the beautiful music of "Taize"
This reflective service works well as we prepare for Lent. Both singing and silence are a vital part of the service. Taize music is not in hymn form, but is based on chant. The words are brief and repetitive to create musical prayer that is accessible to all. "Taize Worship" originates from an ecumenical community of brothers located in the small village of Taize, eastern France. Life at Taize focuses on prayer, work and hospitality.
Following the service, there will be a "wine & cheese" reception for all to enjoy. If you have not had the opportunity to attend in the past, you will not want to miss this event! Trinity is located at 115 N. Sixth Street in Hamilton. For additional information call 513.896.6755

| Real basics for vestries from Episcopal Church Foundation
For the February edition of ECF Vital Practices, you'll find four new articles related to our theme of Real Basics for Vestries, each of which offers a practical response to a common congregational challenge.
Here's what you'll find this month:
At the End of the Day, by Mary Parmer provides an introduction to the Diocese of Texas' Newcomer Ministry Project and its rich array of resources for congregations. Welcoming the stranger well continues to be one of the more challenging aspects of our ministries and this project, piloted at St. Francis in Houston, provides both a roadmap and an array of resources. ------- -------------- ------------------------ --------------- -------------- ------------- -------------- --------------- ---------------- ----------------- -------- --------------- ------------------- ----------------- --------------- -
In Google+ (Jesus+You)=Vital Practices Greg Troxell invites you to take a look at and try out the free resources available through Google+ including Google+ Hangouts. Greg's enthusiasm for this new social media resource has spilled over to the team at ECF Vital Practices; we are partnering with him to introduce Hangouts to you by inviting you to come and hangout with us later this month. ------------------ --------------- --------------- -------------- ------------------ -------------------- ----------------- ------------------- ----------------------- --------------------- ---------A Snapshot of our Urban Neighborhood by Anna Olson, tells the story of how a congregation with most of its members - and its entire vestry - now living in the suburbs, has begun to move off of the church property and begin to reconnect with the surrounding neighborhood. ------------- -------------- -------------- -------------------- ------------------------- -------------- ----------------- ------------------------- -------------------- ------------------------ ----------- -------------------Laurie Kazilionis' Parity in Healthcare offers information and resources to help vestries as they prepare for the addition of their qualified lay employees to The Episcopal Church's denominational health plan by January 2013. -------------- --------------- ----------------- --------------- ----------------- ---------------- ----------------------- -----------
We also have new Vital Post blogs and Your Turn resources which vestry leaders may find helpful. Topics range from some practical 'how to's' for using Google's free tools to reach people seeking engagement with a faith group, to a different approach to church reporting and hospitality, and a way to begin to make the shift from an associative to a missional congregation. Here's a selection of our recent content.
