Message from the Principal

On January 27th, I had the pleasure of visiting Oakland Mills Middle School in Howard County, Maryland, to observe and learn about their Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) program for gifted and talented education, which was started about 30 years ago at the urging of parents. The goal of the visit was to become familiar with the middle school level GT offerings and to understand the differentiated components of the curriculum essential to students who participate in the classes. Time was spent with Howard County administrators, the GT teacher and in several classrooms, observing and interacting with both the teachers and students.The Howard County GT program utilizes a tiered approach to instruction and students qualify based on ability and/or interest. The visit was fun and informative, and it was a pleasure to have an opportunity to forge a relationship with educators who are experienced with this program model.

As previously reported, Chancellor Henderson has provided funding at both Hardy and Kelly Miller Middle Schools for a full-time GT teacher for the 2012-2013 school year. Dr. Carey Wright, Chief Academic Officer, has given me the green light to begin searching for that teacher, who will be the foundation of the program. This teacher is essential to the SEM model, ensuring that there is a person on the faculty who has both the specialized training and specific responsibility for guaranteeing that certain highly targeted services are provided in accordance with the SEM approach. It is important to note that DCPS, like Howard County, will be pursuing a more flexible, versus traditional view of "giftedness," in recognition that there is no one "perfect" identification system for GT programs.

Kudos to Howard County for building and sustaining such an important program and to Chancellor Henderson for listening to DCPS parents and moving forward in the best interests of our students!

Letter from the PTA

Dear Fellow Hardy Parents:

Our Valentine's Day meeting was well-attended and productive. Sixth grade parent Sarah Spooner shared her success in engaging the operator of the weekend flea-market at Hardy to offer us space for a bake sale and a white elephant table this spring. So start thinking about what you might cook or donate as you do your spring cleaning!

In addition, our treasurer reported that recent parent contributions to the PTA and a transfer of funds earned through the Safeway/E-script program have allowed us to reimburse a parent who bought refreshments for the parent-teacher conferences, help another parent purchase needed signage for the school library, and fulfill a 6th grade science teacher's request for $550 worth of books to support this Spring's vegetable gardening program.

Thanks to the increasing numbers of parent donors and other funding sources, the PTA plans to adopt a new budget at its next meeting so that educational needs, inside and outside the classrooms, can be addressed more adequately. Please come to the next general PTA meeting on Tuesday, March 13 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in the school library to participate in this discussion.

Shop at Safeway...and Earn Money for the Hardy PTA

Dear Parents:

Many of you shop at Safeway frequently, and now you have the opportunity to put your Safeway card to work to raise money for the Hardy PTA.  It's easy, and it costs you nothing.

All you have to do is go online to eScrip.com and register your Safeway card.  After that, every time you shop at Safeway, a small portion of your bill will be donated to the Hardy PTA.  We ask that every family help us make the grade in our fundraising goal.

This task will not require hours of homework, but just a few minutes of your time and your Safeway Club card number.

It's easy to do and there is no cost to you.  Here's how to sign up:

*    Go www.eScrip.com, and click on "Sign Up".

*    Enter the Hardy ID - 2479580 - as the "Group I.D."

*    Register your Safeway card number.

*    Shop at Safeway!

That's it! It's that easy -- your family shops, and Hardy earns dollars.
