A Message from the President & CEO

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away.  Shopping is on everyone's mind as we head into the season of giving: there's Black Friday, Cyber Monday and now there's #GivingTuesday.

#GivingTuesday harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners-charities, families, businesses and individuals-to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

LSI will be participating in #GivingTuesday - this year on December 2, 2014 - the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, we will invite you to donate to our mission.  We hope you will choose to support LSI through this unique and global opportunity.

Speaking of support, we could not ask for more support than that shown by our 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon team!  We had 21 team members who have raised over $36,000!  All of our team members starting the race finished - which is tremendous!

Feedback on the Lupus Charity Runners team has been outstanding!  If you ever want to run a marathon or any race, we hope you'll consider joining our team.  We're already recruiting for next year's team - we'd welcome your participation.

Lupus Charity Runners and #GivingTuesday are important because the funds raised make a difference in Illinois' lupus community.  This is true through our programs like the Living with Lupus Grant, the Lupus Personal Advisory Program and the Lupus Education and Awareness Program.  See funds raised transformed into our mission as our 2015 education calendar comes together.  We already have 4 events scheduled and are working hard on putting together more.  These events are only possible with the support of our donors.

Finally, I want to highlight our new membership into the Lupus Research Institute National Coalition.  We feel fortunate to be a part of a national organization that will allow LSI to work toward our mission in Illinois.  Read more about our new partnership here.

Together we make a difference.

Ask Dr. Katz
Can identifying the genetic cause of lupus improve treatment?

A few weeks ago, lupus was in the news thanks to Australian scientists who identified the genetic cause of lupus in a 10 year old girl.  As you know, research indicates there is a genetic component to lupus that requires a trigger like injury, illness or stress.  Identifying the genetic cause of lupus was exciting because it can determine a treatment targeting the cause. If we can identify abnormal chemical proteins related to genetic mutations, we might have a way of neutralizing the abnormal proteins that result from these mutations.

Lupus Charity Runners HUGE Success!

Congratulations to the LSI's Bank of America Chicago Marathon Team!

Together, the team raised over $36,000 for LSI's mission.  The team enjoyed a dinner at Italian Restaurant Bella Notte on Saturday, October 11, 2014 to celebrate their efforts and share information the night before the big event.

Thanks to everyone involved in making this event so wonderful!

Photos from the dinner and race day can be seen here.

Help Us Save Lives!

We are compiling a list of healthcare professionals to contact with information about lupus and the LSI.  Our hope is that these physicians will provide LSI's factual information about lupus to their patients and staff and LSI's lifesaving programs and services will be promoted to those who need it most.

Would you be willing to provide the name and contact information of your personal physicians - rheumatologists, internists, general practitioners, dermatologists, ob/gyn, etc.?

Click here for more & the survey.
LSI Joins the LRI National Coalition

We are excited to partner with a national force in the fight against lupus. As a member of the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) National Coalition we know the voice of Illinois' lupus community will be heard on a national level.

In 2004, with the approval of the LRI's Board, the member organizations of the LRI agreed to unite and form a new national coalition under the LRI to advance lupus research through expanded national level advocacy, awareness and fundraising.

The LRI is uniquely dedicated to novel research in lupus.  Recognizing that most major medical breakthroughs come from unexpected directions, the LRI fosters and supports only the highest-ranked new science to prevent, treat and cure lupus.
