A Message from the President & CEO

Fall is upon us and the holidays are right around the corner. For many people with children, the holiday season begins at the end of October with Halloween, which means we have only a few short weeks to rest before the joyful craziness begins.

Before we all start looking towards 2017, LSI has some important opportunities coming up. First, this Sunday, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon will again feature a Lupus Charity Runners team. This is the 10th year the LSI will have runners participating in this strenuous event.

Imagine running 26.2 miles. Imagine the training that goes into running that distance - how many miles have to be completed first in preparation for one event.

Imagine taking on that event in honor of someone you love with lupus. That's what Kevin Stevens is doing. Kevin is running this year and has run the Chicago Marathon as a Lupus Charity Runner since 2009. You can read about Kevin below and donate to his extraordinary efforts here.

Hats off to all of our Bank of America Chicago Marathon runners! Their dedication is inspiring. Thank you!

Thanks to a Board Member and the LSI Junior Board, LSI is also hosting a Charity Cycling Class. Indoor cycling is a popular fitness activity and LSI was lucky to have the opportunity to host a fundraiser at Flywheel Sports at 1653 N. Wells on October 22nd starting at 2pm. The event welcomes everyone from the experienced to the beginner. What a great opportunity to try something new in a comfortable environment! Space is limited so be sure to register today.

LSI will also be hosting an Educational Teleconference on November 10th featuring Dr. Robert Katz. Be sure to register for what will certainly be an important presentation.

And LSI is already planning for 2017. The 10th Annual Empowering Lupus Patients educational event will be on January 28, 2017 and will again be held at St. Xavier University on Chicago's South Side. Topics are still being finalized and you don't want to miss this comprehensive event.

With 2016 coming to a rapid close, everyone here at LSI wants to thank you. All of the Illinois lupus Walks are still accepting donations (and Lakeshore Recycling Systems walk teams have a special incentive for donating to its teams!) and we have had a wonderfully successful year.

Our work is only possible thanks to the generosity of our volunteers, donors, sponsors and participants. If you have participated in a walk, volunteered at an event, attended an educational event, forwarded an email, donated to a walker or sponsored our mission - THANK YOU!

Together we make a difference,

Charles Brummell

Illinois Rehabilitation Services

The Lupus Community Navigator received a call inquiring about state services for residents on disability.

The Illinois Department of Human Services - Rehabilitation Services (DRS) has 4 major bureaus - including the Bureau of Home Services that provides a wide range of services to individuals with the most significant disabilities to enable them to remain in their homes and live as independently as possible.

DRS serves people with severe disabilities under age 60  who need help with daily living activities in their homes. Many of these people are at risk of moving into a nursing home or other facility. (For those 60 and over, please contact the  Illinois Department on Aging .)
