A Message from the President & CEO

I hope everyone is having a fun and safe summer! This summer, the LSI moved our offices to 411 S. Wells Street - just a few blocks from our previous location at 525 W. Monroe. We're still getting unpacked and we are getting used to our new location - a great space for us to continue to execute our mission!

Our next educational event is coming up on Saturday, July 30, 2016. "To Live With Lupus We Need To Know About Lupus" will be presented by Zineb Aouhab, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Loyola University Medical Center
Division of Rheumatology.   Dr. Aouhab has presented on this topic before and has agreed to present to us again to a new audience in the Western Suburbs. We hope you'll be able to attend.

Like all of our events, the Western Suburbs Educational Event is offered at no cost to participants. This is only possible thanks to the success of our Illinois Lupus Walks.

The Northern and Southern Suburbs Lupus Walks held in May are still raising funds and just recently surpassed the $50,000 fundraising goal! The upcoming Western Suburbs Lupus Walk in Naperville is coming up on August 13 th and the Chicago Lupus Walk is in Lincoln Park on September 18 th . We hope you'll be able to join us to show your support and make these the best walks ever.

In this edition of the eChronicle, you will see we continue to find answers to your questions. We have included an article on medical marijuana and information on the recently announced Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) the newly combined Alliance for Lupus Research and the Lupus Research Institute.

LSI is still here and committed to serving the Illinois Lupus Community. You know us. We are here to help with any of your lupus concerns.

Together we make a difference.

Meet the Western Suburbs Walk Ambassador: Rachel Hampton!
Team LaLa's for Lupus

As humans, what defines each of us is special and unique. We define ourselves by our professions - writer, teacher, astronaut - or by our relationships - father, sister, daughter. We can even be defined by what we say and do each day. But the beauty of our lives is that we also have the power to choose what will not define us, what will not become the headline of our personal story. For 15-year-old Rachel Hampton, her lupus diagnosis has changed the course of her life, but it's clear that she is so much more than that.

After only six months (a short time for a typical lupus diagnosis), Rachel was diagnosed at age 8 after suffering a butterfly rash across her face that wouldn't go away. Persistently, Rachel kept active in gymnastics, track and even cheerleading, until her symptoms started to hold her back.
Rockford Area Support Group names Ashley Mohr its 2016 Lupus Day at the River Ambassador

Ashley Mohr is a wife and mother of two amazingly awesome girls ages 8 and 5 years old.  She was diagnosed with lupus at the age of 24 after suffering from a stroke in 2013.  The date she received her Lupus fighter ribbon was May 29, 2013.  She was diagnosed with a SLE Lupus classification with CNS involvement and severe vasculitis.

The journey has been a struggle but she continues to persevere though the tough days.  A tough day can consist of high anxiety, aching everywhere, swollen joint points, complication with walking and even sensitivity to sound and light.
News You Can useMedmarijuana
Medical Marijuana

LSI has received calls about medical marijuana.
In Illinois, it is now legal for people with lupus to get a prescription for Medical Marijuana.

Anyone receiving Medical Marijuana in Illinois will have to have a Qualifying Patient Registry Identification Card issued through the state of Illinois.

Applicants should discuss the use of medical cannabis with their treating physician before beginning an application. All applicants, except for Veterans receiving care at a VA facility, must have their physician submit a written certification for the use of medical cannabis.

Lupus Research Alliance LRA
Lupus Research Institute and Lupus Research Alliance Merge to form new organization

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), the Lupus Research Institute (LRI), and the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation today announced the merger of the three organizations to form the Lupus Research Alliance.

As the largest private sector organization dedicated to advancing lupus research, the Lupus Research Alliance leads the quest to free the world of this autoimmune disease through the power of scientific research.

Collectively, the three legacy organizations have devoted more than 75 years to the cause and are responsible for funding over $200 million to support lupus research programs.  By joining forces as the Lupus Research Alliance, the organization serves as the primary catalyst setting the agenda to yield new scientific discoveries into prevention, treatment and cure of the disease.

Kenneth M. Farber, formerly President of the Alliance for Lupus Research and Margaret G. Dowd, formerly President and CEO of the Lupus Research Institute, serve as Co-CEOs of the new organization.
