A Message from the President & CEO

The Holidays are here!  One week from today is Thanksgiving and then, before you know it, the new year.
Looking back on 2016, we have much to be thankful for.  All four Illinois Lupus Walks have been a huge success.  Our educational events are reaching more people - the teleconference last week on Lupus & Fibromyalgia presented by Dr. Katz had an unprecedented 140+ registered participants (if you missed the presentation, you can listen to it in its entirety here).  The Lupus Charity Runners program completed another successful B ank of America Chicago Marathon and we are already recruiting for our 2017 team.
Lupus Charity Runners is a tremendous program. Since 2007, LSI has had a team in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and each team brings awareness and much needed funds to our mission. This year, LSI is partnering with Chicago Endurance Sports (CES) to offer group and virtual training to runners and Lupus Charity Runners will get access to the Race Day Resort CES hosts on race day. The Race Day Resort will be a place runners can go to before the race to meet up with other Lupus Charity Runners, grab some carbs, and check their gear before heading over to the marathon. We are so excited about this new partnership - we're looking forward to the 2017 team!
LSI has guaranteed spots for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. That means, if you don't want to risk getting selected through the lottery, you can run for lupus and agree to raise $1,250. LSI will provide you the online platform to raise funds, a fundraising catalogue and all of the support you'll need to raise funds. As a Lupus Charity Runner, you'll get your training, a Lupus Charity Runners singlet, water bottle, and 2 tickets to the pasta dinner the Friday night before the race.
We hope you'll join us for the 2017 Lupus Charity Runner team!
Funds raised by Lupus Charity Runners enable the LSI to continue to provide our programs and services at no cost to those in need - like our upcoming Empowering Lupus Patients Educational Seminar on January 28, 2017. The event will again be at St. Xavier University on Chicago's South Side.  Information is still coming in and I would definitely save the date.
From everyone at the LSI, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!
Together we make a difference,
Charles Brummell
The Lupus Voice Grows
by Heather Mingus

Heather Mingus is a volunteer for the LSI and has donated her time over the past year to help educate the world about lupus by telling one story at a time.  Heather attended her first Illinois Lupus Walk this past September and shared this story with us.  Thank you, Heather, for all of your support!

On the morning of September 18th, 1,000+ people woke up with one purpose: joining the Lupus Society of Illinois (LSI) in Lincoln Park to walk in support of this consuming, confusing disease. For the 16th year in a row, LSI hosted this event to spread awareness and raise money for the supp
ort survivors and families of this disease. But these walks are only one facet of their dedication to bringing people together, giving them hope, and building a steadfast community for their members to turn to when the larger world may not understand what it is they truly need.

2016 Bank of America
Chicago Marathon

On October 9, 2016, Lupus Charity Runners set out to raise awareness and funds for lupus and the LSI!

The Friday before the race, LSI hosted its Lupus Charity Runners pasta dinner - a great opportunity to meet and network with other runners and individuals in the lupus community.

As always, the Chicago Marathon was an inspiring event and together the LSI's 7 runners raised over $10,000 so far!

Thanks to the volunteers who came out to cheer our runners on!

But very special thanks to the Lupus Charity Runners themselves who chose to run 26.2 miles to support the LSI.
