Mark L NRC Board Strategizes in DC

A Message from
Mark Lichtenstein

NRC President

Our board recently held what I consider to be one of the best meetings I've ever attended (I know I'm biased, but it's true)! We were joined by many esteemed guests, and were privileged to learn from potential national partners about their priorities. We engaged in a number of very important strategic discussions. The meeting truly demonstrated the organization's transition from being "on the ropes" just a few short years ago, to a forward-thinking body fully engrossed with the challenge of moving recycling forward. Based on these productive discussions, the NRC is entertaining and will be launching a number of important initiatives. Some highlights include:

  • Strategic National Partnerships: We will soon take action on potential partnerships with three organizations based on their presentations:
  • Scott Cassell, CEO & Founder, Product Stewardship Institute
  • Mitch Hedlund, Executive Director, Recycle Across America
  • Mike Virga, Executive Director, US Composting Council
  • Recycling Job Creation: Our Recycling Jobs Task Force reported that they are deeply involved in an analysis of numerous job reports and studies from a number of national, regional, and state organizations. Soon, they will be making recommendations about how to more effectively articulate the positive impact recycling has on the economy, better characterize the jobs in our industry, and more importantly, develop strategies meant to accelerate sustainable economic development in the US through generation of more recycling jobs.
  • Sustainable Materials Management: I reported on our interactions with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding their efforts to promote sustainable materials management (SMM). We continue to interact with the EPA as they develop their important SMM agenda.
  • Beverage Container Recycling: Soon, we'll be rolling-out targeted programs intended to increase the recycling of beverage containers. Stay tuned!
These are but a few of the important subjects the board talked about. I encourage you to get involved in our discussions around these and other topics that we know will be informing national discourse and policy.

My very best,

NRC President
Webinar Today:
Creating Jobs Through Recycling

Brought to you by Container Recycling Institute (CRI) featuring
NRC's Recycling Jobs Task Force

We all know that recycling is good for the environment, but is it also good for the economy?  The Container Recycling Institute has recently released a report quantifying the net benefits of job creation from increased beverage container recycling.

Today, CRI is hosting a free webinar designed to provide an overview of the report. The webinar will be led by the report's two co-authors, Clarissa Morawski of CM Consulting and Jeffrey Morris, Ph.D. of Sound Resource Management Group.  Also joining them will be Melinda Uerling, Chair of NRC's Recycling Jobs Task Force.  Melinda will give an overview of the group's objectives and current progress in its efforts to gain recognition and support for recycling job creation among policy-makers, green jobs experts, environmental advocates, investors, workforce development entities, economic development professionals, entrepreneurs, local government officials, and others.

Costs for both virgin raw materials and energy will continue to rise while landfill space decreases.  The economic boost provided by recycling jobs along with the environmental benefit of landfill diversion is a win-win for communities and the recycling industry.

Date: Friday, May 11

Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PDT

May Webinar
Reverse and Removal Supply Chain Dynamics - What's in it for Recycling?

When: Monday, May 14

Time: 1:30pm - 2:45pm EST
REGISTER HERE

Until a few years ago, the reverse chain was deployed with a view to minimize costs by allowing waste materials to accumulate over time and eventually be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. But now with proper reverse supply chain management, manufactures have realized avoided costs and in some cases identified new sources of revenue through recycling of waste materials and off specification products. Today more and more attention is being devoted to the reverse supply chain and the critical importance of managing the entire product life cycle. Our expert speakers will address the key concepts of reverse supply chain management and the related social and economic demands.

Speakers:

Steven Dunn, Ph.D., CPIM, Associate Professor of Finance and Director of the Center for Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh

Richard Young, Ph.D., Professor of Supply Chain Management at Penn State Harrisburg

First-Ever US Dept. of Education Green Ribbon Schools

The US Department of Education awarded 78 schools for their efforts to reduce their environmental impact, promote health, and ensure a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the skills and sustainability concepts they need to succeed. 66 public and 12 private schools in urban and rural communities were chosen to receive the "green ribbon".
