A Message From the President:
Get Involved!

Dear Fellow Colleagues in Recycling,

Many of you have heard me say this over the last year as I've talked about the NRC and the state of recycling - in Erie, Indianapolis, Omaha, Northampton (MA), San Antonio, Washington, and beyond. I'm referencing the rhetorical but ever-present question I face: "Exactly who is the National Recycling Coalition?" I haven't equivocated with my response of, "You are!" I know that sounds like a clich. We've all heard membership-based organizations say the same thing. In our case, there is deep meaning behind the statement. Similarly, I'm asked many times: "What is the NRC offering?" Not to be glib, but I always implore the questioner to help us answer that question.

Our board is moving forward on many fronts, and has no shortage of major initiatives in our quiver. We also fully acknowledge that the NRC has a large portfolio of successful endeavors accumulated during the decades that have passed from its inception in 1978, and we should savor and build on those successes (and we are). However, our current slate is being written-on very carefully. It's like a Scrabble game board, we have the letter tiles and are starting to rearrange them on the board, but have many spaces yet to fill. We need you to help spell-out our future, and this will increasingly happen through our committees-where the NRC "rubber is hitting the road." Volunteers are the soul of this organization, and I would argue, have been from the start.

Can I ask you to put your talents and expertise to work with other professionals who are dedicated to advancing source reduction, reuse, composting, and recycling? Take a look at the committees we've already got started.

Awards Committee (coming soon)

Communications & Education Committee

Conference Committee

Finance Committee

Fund Development Committee

Gala Committee

Membership Committee

Policy Committee

Renew the NRC (Strategic Planning/Governance) Committee

For more details on the role of each NRC committee visit our website.

Can you contribute to the ongoing success of the NRC, and to the furtherance of increased national diversion goals? If a committee is not your preference, we have other opportunities for your creative energy.

When you've found your NRC niche, or need help identifying it, contact Lisa Ruggero to find out when the next committee meeting will be held, or how else you might engage with this worthy national effort.

Greenest Regards,

NRC President

Mark Lichtenstein
