"A New Vision for Oil and Gas Oversight: Critical Issues in North

Hydraulic Fracturing or "Fracking" (injecting water & chemicals
into the ground to break rocks & release natural gas) has been
disastrous to the environment in Tarrant County, and its coming
soon to Western Dallas County! Toxic gases have been released into
the air, and dangerous chemicals have seeped into ground water in
the Barnett Shale. Voters are angry. State oversight is lax. Its
time for your voice to be heard NOW on the RR Comm before it is too
late.

Three
Myths About Progressive Talk Radio
|
Conservatives dominate talk radio, as everybody knows.
Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Savage, Ingraham-the big names are all
right-wingers. Three-quarters of the news-talk programming in the
top ten talk markets is conservative; and on any given weekday, the
ratio of conservative to progressive programming, measured in
hours, is about 10:1. Conservative shows make money hand over fist,
while the most high-profile liberal adventure in talk, Air America
Radio, declared bankruptcy (for the second-and almost certainly
last-time) earlier this year. So, it looks like conservatives are
just way better than progressives at talk radio; they get it in a
way liberals don't. Right? Dead wrong, says Bill Press, a
(successful) progressive talk radio host and author of Toxic Talk:
How the Radical Right Has Poisoned America's Airwaves. He says
conservatives and liberals alike subscribe to three key myths about
progressive talk radio, myths that hold progressives back from
really using the medium to full effect. They are:
1. Liberals can't do talk radio
2. Nobody wants to listen to progressive talk radio
3. Liberal programming can't make money on talk radio

Amazon.com Review
These are indeed cynical times. But to hide behind the smugness of
cynicism is a kind of self-imposed death sentence, explains writer
and social commentator Paul Loeb. In fact, now is the ideal time
for gathering all our strengths and wisdom as spiritual beings and
applying ourselves to shaping a better world, he claims.
Are we talking social activism here? Well, yes. But before you
cringe from images of shrill, humorless, burned out activists, keep
in mind that Loeb is talking about a new kind of activism--an
exciting, spiritual model for creating social change. We don't have
to be pious or martyred saints (as he explains throughout one
chapter), starving ourselves in the name of a cause or staging
protests in freezing rain. We can be "good enough" activists,
assuming the task of helping 10 people in need rather than taking
on the globe. We can remember the power of storytelling when
convincing an audience, rather than angrily spewing scary facts. We
can replenish ourselves so that we do not burn out. We can
emphasize themes such as community and forgiveness rather than
separatism and blame.
This is a deeply spiritual book, but make no mistake: Loeb's
writing, research, and integrity are as solid as they come. Soul of
a Citizen may well become The Handbook for activism at the turn of
the century. --Gail Hudson

Is Rick Perry a Coward?
Wednesday, September 22nd from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at TCC-South Campus.
is your chance to find out. That is the date and time for a
Gubernatorial Forum right here in Tarrant County.
So far the Governor, in addition to running from the editorial
boards of every major daily in the state, has indicated he will not
be in attendance.
That does not mean, however, that you shouldn't be there. This is
not just a great opportunity to hear Bill White speak about the
challenges Texas faces and how, as our Governor he will work to
solve them. But, it is a great way to answer the question for
yourself: have we had a Coward in the Governor's Mansion all these
years?

Banned
Book Week
|
Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating
the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.
Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week
highlights the benefits of free and open access to information
while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting
actual or attempted bannings of books across the United
States.
Intellectual freedom-the freedom to access information and express
ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered
unorthodox or unpopular-provides the foundation for Banned Books
Week. BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of
unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and
access them.

Aren't We Clever?
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN- NY Times
|
So while America's Republicans turned
"climate change" into a four-letter word - J-O-K-E - China's
Communists also turned it into a four-letter word -
J-O-B-S.

What a contrast. In a year that's on track to be our planet's
hottest on record, America turned "climate change" into a
four-letter word that many U.S. politicians won't even dare utter
in public. If this were just some parlor game, it wouldn't matter.
But the totally bogus "discrediting" of climate science has had
serious implications. For starters, it helped scuttle Senate
passage of the energy-climate bill needed to scale U.S.-made clean
technologies, leaving America at a distinct disadvantage in the
next great global industry. And that brings me to the contrast:
While American Republicans were turning climate change into a wedge
issue, the Chinese Communists were turning it into a work
issue.

The Dallas Peace Center would like to honor those people in our
community who work diligently for peace, justice and human rights

who do mailings, tutor children, plan programs, do data entry. If
you know someone like this who should be honored, whether or not
they are currently associated with the DPC, please let us know.
Email us at office@dallaspeacecenter.org and write "Unsung Heros"
