Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m., St. John's Cathedral;
Oct. 11, 3 p.m., St. Gabriel's, 6190 E. Quincy Ave., Cherry Hills Village
Modeled on the "Madrigal Comedies" of the Renaissance, Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore" tells the story of a poet who keeps the mythical creatures of the title as pets, which each become fashionable in their turn but are then discarded by the residents of the poet's town. The entire piece is an allegory of social mores, transient tastes and the fleeting nature of artistic freedom. This production has been scored for string quartet by St. Martin's Artistic Director Tim Krueger, so this is a world premiere performance. Ballet Arts and the Confluence String Quartet join St. Martin's in this whimsical and rarely-performed work. Two compositions of Samuel Barber, Adagio for Strings and Reincarnations, round out this must see program.

The planning group chose a format compatible with both St Tim's character as an Episcopal community and the ecumenicity at the root of the Taize movement. The 45-minute to one hour Taize services build on the liturgy of Compline, adding music and time for meditation. The services will run at least through October.

Formational meeting: Vergers' Guild of the Episcopal Church

Calling all vergers, those interested in becoming vergers, and clergy interested in having vergers in their parish: Come to this gathering to help form a Colorado chapter of the Vergers' Guild of the Episcopal Church. Vergers are tasked as lay assistants to the bishop, dean, rector, vicar or priest-in-charge of a parish. Though many people recognize a verger's duties leading processions, in truth this accounts for just 5 percent of a verger's work. They are, the words of the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, new Presiding Bishop, the "concierges of the church."
RSVP to Tom Brewster, head verger at St. John's, Boulder, either by email by snail mail to St. John's, 1419 Pine St., Boulder, CO 80302. Add "VGEC Chapter" in the subject line.

Bishop Andudu Adam Elnail, bishop-in-exile from the Diocese of Kadugli in Sudan, has been in Denver since 2011, when his offices were destroyed and his home fired on as Sudanese government troops bombed and raided Kadugli. Tuition and living costs amount to just over $24,000 a year.

St. John's Cathedral has created a designated account to accept donations to help Bishop Andudu. To contribute, send checks to: St. John's Cathedral, 1350 Washington St., Denver, CO 80203. In the memo line, put "Bishop Andudu."
