Workshop instructor Telaekah Brooks, Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Trinity University, helps workshop participants to write a successful business plan.  The deadline for the StartRight! business plan competition is less than two weeks away.  See details below.
News You Can Use

The StartRight! Business Plan competition will award more than $20,000 in cash prizes.  If you have been in business for less than two years, are at least 51% woman-owned, and are operating in Maryland, D.C., or Virginia, you are eligible to submit your business plan.  The deadline is June 29 for a two-page executive summary.  Full plans are due July 8 at 4 p.m.  For details and a list of sponsors, please visit the RWBC website at www.rockvillewbc.org.

Please join us in extending a big thank-you to Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and the Montgomery County Council for their support of the Rockville Women's Business Center in the County's FY12 operating budget!

Are you interested in hosting a youth intern for free this summer? YWD Summer Youth Jobs program will provide you with an office assistant for 30 hours per work, for six full weeks, at no cost to you! If you are looking for a little extra help this summer, while giving great workforce experience to a deserving high school student, please contact Marie Parker at 240-899-2845 or mparker@montgomeryworks.com

Did You Know?

The U.S. Department of Labor has specified 6 criteria which must be satisfied for someone to be properly considered an intern under the FLSA rules.  This article from the New York Times gives a good overview of the issue.

Tips to Grow By

Looking for a good beach read?  Check out the following business books by local women entrepreneurs!

In The Complete Idiot's Guide(r) to Social Media Marketing, social media guru Jennifer Abernathy helps you to get ahead of the competition.  This book is a must read for people with a product, service, or business who want to use social media as part of their marketing strategy.  With down-to-earth advice, Abernathy covers all the most influential social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIN, and YouTube, and helps people determine which sites and functions are the most productive for their business.  http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Social-Marketing/dp/1592579892

In The ParentPreneur Edge, award winning entrepreneur and mother of two, Julie Lenzer Kirk draws upon her extensive experience to offer readers the humor, practical advice, and strategies needed to start, grow, and run a successful business. Using parenting anecdotes, she provides a refreshing twist on the typical business book. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, this book explores the similarities between parenting and running a business, and reveals how readers can successfully draw on parenting insights to provide an edge in entrepreneurship.  www.julielenzerkirk.com

In Market to the Max, marketing executive Robyn Sachs offers a highly accessible framework, the marketing pyramid, to help you develop a marketing strategy based on your goals, budget and timeframe.   There's a reason why the Great Pyramids have stood for so long: They are built to last. A solid base provides a secure foundation for the subsequent layers. Each new layer is built upon the previous layer until the entire structure is so solid it can withstand ages of wear and tear and still remain standing.  In a similar fashion, this book will help you to maximize your marketing effort, through good times and bad, and develop a strategy built to last.  http://markettothemax.net

In That's So Annoying, Cynthia Lett offers that unique combination of qualities every book should have:  humor, entertainment, and something of practical value.  Instead of giving us a dry list of rules of etiquette,  Lett gives us ways to handle those boorish moments we all face without losing our sense of humor.  What are the right rules for the coffee machine at work? Why are so many retail clerks rude? Are there new rules for social media?  This book explains the proper responses to all the most common irritations. Whether you are the matriarch of an unruly family trying to keep order, or an entrepreneur trying to figure out how to deal with pushy or messy clients and colleagues, this is a book for you. It's as funny as it is useful. http://www.thatssoannoyingbook.com/
